The top rec holds better memories for me. My cousin's house is on Babylon Lane. Throughout my childhood, family gatherings, which always seemed to be in summer, often ended up in us all playing football, cricket or flying home made kites on the rec, way into the sun lit evening.

The bottom rec on the other has memories of playing competitive football matches in the freezing cold, on what if I remember rightly were flat, but normally wet and muddy pitches. Great for slide tackles though :)
Hope is what keeps us going.

For years I believed the word was wreck. It came as a huge disappointment to me in later years to discover it was just a shortening of recreation ground. Somehow doesn't have quite the same mystery and allure knowing that.

Yeah me too! And as others have pointed out, it would be more fitting for the pitches on St George's Playi....The Top Wreck.

Ha! Me too!

I thought our village park had the unique nickname Wreck. I didn't understand how other places also had the same nickname for their parks. I must have been into my early teens before I saw a sign on an entrance to a park somewhere, and then penny dropped.
Hope is what keeps us going.

Very fitting. Worst pitches in the Chorley League (Though Astley Hall gave them a run for their brass ;) )

I won't post this in the Christmas thread as it is a downer.

This might all be off. My ex-wife's sister's husband died this morning of a heart attack. Although I hadn't seen much of him for the last ten years since the divorce, he was a good chap for an Italian  . He was 55. He was a Phys Ed teacher and used to warn me about smoking, drinking and lack of exercise. Well, I've stopped smoking... Life is not fair.

RIP Franco.

Thanks, guys. Way too young as you say. He had four daughters and the eldest gave him his first grandchild a month ago.

Shame, it seems for every person who lives unhealthily and dies young there seems to be 1 who lives a very good lifestyle but also goes young. It does make you think about whether the health professionals know what they are on about. Sadly your right MW life is not fair. Hope your family and your ex wife's family manage to get through this difficult period and come out the other side better for it.

I don't want you're personal examples, I have plenty of my own - and they do not undermine the educated findings of healthcare professionals or the priciple that people that look after themselves live longer on average than those that don't.

Daring Article. It's a horse. The bloke that owns it is a friend of mine. It's running somewhere or other tomorrow and is apparentltly worth an each-way bet. It won its last race and my mate won a fist full of cash. Don't blame me if it comes last though because I know feck all about it! :?

It's running tomorrow at Leopardstown at 14.55. Given the course Spotty should consider a bet. The owner is listed as More Blues Syndicate.

A quick drive up to the Lakes this morning and up onto Wansfell above Ambleside. I had zero energy. Not a good walk and have come home exhausted. New boots tested though, legs stretched, watched a farmer at work with three dogs so not a totally wasted morning. And back in time for football!
