Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
A half brother to Black Caviar (a sprinting mare who won umpteen races in a row) died yesterday. Apparently he was bitten by a spider on his hoof area. Whatever it was that the veterinarian used to counter the problem produced an allergic reaction. I don't think his owners will be very happy today.
If the sporting journalists are correct he was worth AUD 5,000,000. That is an obscene figure; I could buy a lovely mansion overlooking Sydney Harbour for about that sort of outlay.

Nor could I pay the upkeep for the colt.

Bugger a house in Oz. I've just seen a detached two bed cottage in the Vendee for 68 grand complete with huge piece of land and a lakeside View. That'd do nicely.

Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
We have a "spare" car. A 12yr old Toyota Starlet. Small & easy to drive it's book value must be abour £50 now despite it having only 27,000 on the clock.
It was the mother-in-law's and she can't drive any more (you should have seen her when she could btw !!) so we have it in our drive. We've untaxed it and so can't take it onto the road. I've tucked it up to a laurel hedge which is overhung by a laburnum.
It starts first time amazingly. It's become filthy after a year there and laburnum seeds, leaves and dead Laurel leaves adorn it. It's actually begun to grow an algae on it's roof and paintwork.
So today I gave it's engine a turn-over, moved it a little in the drive and gave it a nice, proper, clean. Lovely. It looks like a normal, small, 12 yr old car again. I moved the leaves and found about a dozen laburnum seeds which had sprouted. I suspect if I'd left it any longer it would have had mini trees growing from it's air vents.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Sounds like the kind of car I would buy. I've had 8 cars since 1998, paid between £50 and £950, and only ever sold them to the scrapyard. Also never had a new style reg, latest model I've owned is the current S reg Focus. It's kind of an obsession now.bobo the clown wrote:We have a "spare" car. A 12yr old Toyota Starlet. I described something earlier to my colleagues as being "a Curate's egg". Not a one of them had heard the term before. It's not THAT uncommon is it?

It's a bit nineteenth century, Bruce. As I recall it the curate answered the bishop's question about how he liked his egg (which was bad), saying it was good in parts. I saw it as a reprinted cartoon probably from Punch.Bruce Rioja wrote:I described something earlier to my colleagues as being "a Curate's egg". Not a one of them had heard the term before. It was first used in a Punch cartoon, Monty. My collegues informed me of this having all dived on the internet straight away. I'm convinced it's still fairly common in modern parlance.Montreal Wanderer wrote:It's a bit nineteenth century, Bruce. Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
It depends on our age and background I suppose. I was familiar with the phrase "it's all gas and gaiters" which meant everything was great (first used by Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby as I recently discovered but familiar to me from Wodehouse). The phrase was apparently used by a British radio and later tv show in the 1960s and it has come to mean a lot of episcopal hot air. If anyone knows the phrase now it will be in a different context from the one I learned.Bruce Rioja wrote:It was first used in a Punch cartoon, Monty. I'd heard the term, but would have had to go check what it meant had the answer not been in a response.Bruce Rioja wrote:I described something earlier to my colleagues as being "a Curate's egg". Not a one of them had heard the term before. It's not THAT uncommon is it?

Nor me and I'm not that much younger than Bruce.
