Eastern Europeans do make me laugh the way they talk on the one hand about what good wages are paid in England, and then on the other about how expensive everything is here, as if the two things are totally unrelated.

One can only speak from personal experience, of which I suspect you have precious little, if any, but as an exporting manufacturer we often advertise positions for which language skills are required - we never receive applications from Brits. I'll let you know when the next one comes up as these positions are quite well paid and you obviously have a multilingual skillset, don't you? I wouldn't want to see a job, to which you're so obviously entitled, handed to Johnny Foreigner.

Also, I'm perfectly happy to pay a bunch of Kosovars £10 to mini-valet my car. They make an absolutely outstanding job of it. If Hoboh's Big Hand Wash can do as good a job for the same sum then I'm happy to bring it to you. Tell me again, where is Hoboh's Big Hand Wash?

Do you not get any applications from language grads, Bruce?

Language grads?? In my humble experience, I've yet to find a graduate who can write a legible, grammatically correct sentence in English, let alone another language.

You must only meet ones from former Poly's Bob.

There are still proper ones out there, honest.

I had the misfortune to be asked to review some 2nd year law student assignments for a 'red brick' uni some while ago.

One of them was so pish poor, I felt compelled to spell check it, correct the mistakes made around the use of the legislation and return it with a polite note.

I got a snotty reply asking if I was some form of, and I quote 'Spelling Nazi" pointing out that it had been marked uncorrected by the tutor as a B+

My personal favourite though was our first class honours degree student from Bristol uni, employed as a trainee transport manager. Day 3, he cried because he couldn't change a punctured tyre. I quote again "My mum changes the wheels and fills the petrol up". I sh1t thee not.

Yes, we have, but Hinge and Brackett in HR aren't at the root of this problem.

Folk will always travel to where the work is and to make a better life for their families, as they have done for centuries. However, allegedly one of the impacts of the last influx of migrants from eastern Europe was to drive down wages in the building sector, where similar arguments were put forward. I spoke to a few guys in that trade who were struggling to compete on cost - Their workforce was largely British with mortgages, kids etc who liked time off occasionally - their competitors were 6 or 7 guys living in temporary accommodation who were prepared to work 7 days a week for want of anything else to do - who were sending any profits back to their families in Poland, Lithuania etc

Not sure what can be done to prevent that, and you certainly can't blame the immigrants doing this work. Standards may improve but in terms of wages doesn't it all just lead to a race to the bottom?

1. I work in Logistics so yes we do from time to time require interpreters but they sure as hell ain’t just ‘someone capable of speaking the lingo’.

2. Nice offer but I doubt you pay anything like enough, but thanks anyway.

3. Overseas exporter, kinda explains your love in with Europe then!

Oh I'll bet you are, helping them export cash abroad, being in the export market. Just make sure you remove ow't of value anyways Kosovars would be illegal, you support breaking the law?

I currently have a builder working on my place. I've had to wait patiently for him to get round to me. The work he carries out is slow, but to absolute precision, and comes at a cost. I'm more that happy to pay him whatever it is he requests because by way of value he delivers at a standard I require. John Ruskin once said "There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey". Oscar Wilde also said “A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.”.

They were both bang on.

1: Oh, you're a van driver?! Trust me, the people that we take on have to be much further qualified than simply knowing the lingo. However, how do you propose we, and you, otherwise get around this? :conf:

The answer to all this fuss about EU migration seems simple to me. Apply benefits and other entitlements to a reciprocal arrangement ie. If you come from Romaijhna, you are eligible to receive what a UK citizen would receive from the Romanian government ie basically feck all.

Problem sorted.
