Gunga Din's been shipped off to the US, and no, not in a boat with a tiger in it.

So, in our office, my four foreign colleagues can be let off, but five of my six British colleagues are (even) older than me. I really have a perception that it's a term in common usage and commonly understood.

Must just be me.

We have a "spare" car. A 12yr old Toyota Starlet. Small & easy to drive it's book value must be abour £50 now despite it having only 27,000 on the clock.

It was the mother-in-law's and she can't drive any more (you should have seen her when she could btw !!) so we have it in our drive. We've untaxed it and so can't take it onto the road. I've tucked it up to a laurel hedge which is overhung by a laburnum.

It starts first time amazingly. It's become filthy after a year there and laburnum seeds, leaves and dead Laurel leaves adorn it. It's actually begun to grow an algae on it's roof and paintwork.

So today I gave it's engine a turn-over, moved it a little in the drive and gave it a nice, proper, clean. Lovely. It looks like a normal, small, 12 yr old car again. I moved the leaves and found about a dozen laburnum seeds which had sprouted. I suspect if I'd left it any longer it would have had mini trees growing from it's air vents.

I think refs do get paid, I know someone who does u16 games and he gets £90 a weekend for it - he does 6 75 minute games each weekend mind.

Booked flights to Portugal at Easter last weekend for £211 each. A bit more than we normally pay, but it's the school holidays so the bullet had to be bitten.

Just a little bit concerned. The gardener, Mrs Dujon, has been advised.
A friend of ours is also an electrician. He popped in today for a cup of coffee and a chat. Whilst he was here I asked him if he could replace a power point socket and plate as Mrs D had classified it as 'grubby'. Mrs D also asked him if he could check some lights that are supposed to illuminate the steps to the street but most of which have failed. The replacement power point was duly done. There are no 'mate's rates' between us so he was paid properly.

When he checked the step lights he found at the very top of the line a juvenile looking brown snake curled around the fitting. As most snakes do, it quietly excused itself and disappeared into the shrubbery. I have no idea as to his snake identification skills although he did describe it as brown, about two feet in length and quite skinny (about the diameter of his ring finger). Over the years I've despatched red-bellied reds and even a tiger snake - the latter at my previous house about 4Km from where I now live - but the brown snake now loose in the garden is a worry.

If it can grow all the way to a Pseudechis australis I'd try to get it now!

They have no idea whether I want to be buried or cremated (cremated please-1 hour at gas mark 30) or what music I'd like at the funeral. Difficult conversations, but ones we should all have.

Brings up an interesting conversation I had with the missus a couple of weeks back.

Her 19 yo cousin died of a brain aneurysm last year. He was on the donor register, but when asked, his parents wouldn't allow organs to be taken.

It's obviously a very sensitive subject, but both her and I, said that we'd wish for our organs to be donated and that there is a case pending from the NHS that if somebody is on the register, the family shouldn't be asked and that the organs are taken.

I'm all for that, but can understand why people wouldn't want this to happen to loved ones.

I can understand that they wouldn't like it, but they should have no right to overrule the wishes of the deceased.
My Mum has always said she wouldn't like it for me or my sis, but part of that apparently comes from working in a theatre and seeing the arrogance and disrespect of the organ harvest team.

Legally, they can't override the wishes of the deceased, however hospital staff for obvious reasons, won't. To put things in perspective, there are over 100,000 people currently waiting for an organ. Only 5000 patients end up as donors every year. That's a shocking stat by anyone's reckoning.
