Old people have a phone in every room in case they have a fall or something...

surely it's more normal for them to have a panic button thing around their neck?

I imagine you may have visited more old folk than I bish in your official capacity so I could easily accept that if you think more common! I say it as I've just seen it with the phones a few times & know through my company we do quite a bit of internal wiring for such cases (less so now with the wireless tech)

oh - i'm sure people must do that... problem is - if you've had a fall and broken your hip - you're not going to get to the phone even if it is in the same room - unless you've had the foresight to put it in the middle of the floor... but, then, if you have - the chances are that you will trip over it!
