Can't say I despise any of that, hoboh. There may be no surprise in that. Why do you?

Bloody hell you didn't expect me to spend hours pouring over Billy bloody Bragg did you?thebish wrote:well done with the cut and paste...
but where does he say anything even vaguely related to people living in big houses and that being a bad thing? what is he spouting there that you disagree with?
is it his anti-racist campaigning?
his protests over phone-hacking?
his campaigning against the BNP?
his support of multi racial britain?
his opposing the misuse of anti-terror laws by the police?
what is it that you object to - and what does any of what he "spouts" have to do with what house he lives in?

What about the bits you left out?
"Bragg supports Scottish independence and Welsh independence".
In March 2006, journalist Garry Bushell (a former Trotskyist who ran as a candidate for the English Democrats in 2005) accused Bragg of "pontificating on a South London council estate when we all know he lives in a lovely big house in West Dorset".
In 2011 Bragg joined the Occupy Movement protests.
Not bad for a champagne socialist!!

You despise her because she lives in a council house, presumably amongst her constituents AND has a big house elsewhere, presumably where part of her family live?Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Baroness Uddin another. Has a huge house in Pakistan too.
Where could she live that you would condone?
Edit - apologies, spotty, Baronesses don't have constituents!!!

You are singing from the same hymm sheet you and bish

I seriously doubt BB's sincerity in what he spouts as opposed to his life style which should really be what people should be aiming for, not having it handed on a silver platter to them.
Hard work will destroy injustice not crap singers like him!

Despite having a lot of money from his work in the music industry he refuses to go the conventional way of the moneyed and betray his beliefs and become a smug tory arsehole. well - if you are going to slag him off and say he can't live in a big house - then I would expect you to have some idea what you are slagging off - yes!

in what sense has billy bragg had anything handed to him on a silver platter? in what sense has he not worked hard to combat injustice?
what on earth are you raving about???
and what exactly is it about his "lifestyle" that you object to?? - because you haven't made that clear at all.... how does his lifestyle clash with "what he spouts"?? you're just shouting words - none of them add up to any meaningful criticism of bragg...

Re: The Politics Thread
Champagne socialist is an oft used term that I'm not sure means anything. If you have lots of money but still want to help people and society and dedicate your time and efforts to doing so then surely that is a good thing? I mean it isn't hypocritical unless you are arguing that nobody should have money except yourself. Which I don't think any "socialists" or "do gooders" actually are. I mean if I had millions I'd still argue for higher taxation for the highest earners even though I myself would fall in that bracket. So would that therefore make me a "despicable person" more so than if I argued that as an average earner?
However, it seems that having a big house, fancy car and loadsa money and being a greedy in it for yourself selfish so and so is preferable. Not sure I'll ever understand that argument.

so... let me get this straight... your position is that pop singers should sincerely mean all the words that they sing and not live in big houses - but also not live in council houses and never drink champagne?
is that right?
Re: The Politics Thread
It's the same logic that was used against these 'occupy' people. 'How can they criticise capitalism if they all own iPhones and drink Starbucks?'thebish wrote:Hoboh wrote: I seriously doubt BB's sincerity in what he spouts as opposed to his life style which should really be what people should be aiming for, not having it handed on a silver platter to them.

I suppose I can't criticise communism whilst eating chinese food or smoking cuban cigars.

Which countries enjoy the best overall reputation from a survey of G8 citizens? You can read all about it here in Forbes magazine. The UK does not appear to be in the top ten, but then nor is the US.

So highly liberalised, forward thinking countries in the main? And Canada, of course.

Re: The Politics Thread
I'm not against people who work all their working lives and pay in getting a proper pension. My point is people aren't working all their working lives anymore. People are living for way longer than was envisaged when these ages were set and we can't afford it. They've paid in, but unfortunately, it seems they haven't paid in enough. Pensions age needs revising upwards, and quickly. But you can't say that, because the nearer you get to the pension age, the more people vote. Under 25s, who'll end up paying for it all, don't vote, so presumably don't need houses.Hoboh wrote:What bits are nuts?Prufrock wrote:There's a dangerous amount of that that's not nuts! I mean, some of it stilll is, obviously, but bloody hell Hoboh.
What the feck is that no housing benefits for the under 25s?! Pure politiics. They don't don't vote, so f*ck em. Meanwhile, yet again pensions are fine. Wonder why?
Truths are sometimes painfull. 'fraid I differ with you on pensions, these people have 'paid in' all their working lives and are entitled to it, rich or poor. That is not to say however that heating, bus passes, free tv licence's etc should be universal same as child benefit shouldn't.
The youth of this country are being f*cked over by cheap imported low skill labour as used by glorious little tax paying, multi nationals.
It's another ill-thought out cluster f*ck where you can see where they had the kernel of an idea, fleshed it out and then thought f*ck it, that'll do, we don't need to do nuance or actual thinking.
"We'd like to save money on housing. What if some people could actually if needs-be live with someone else. Lots of under-25s could move back in with their parents. Let's get rid of automatic housing benefit for the under 25s. That sounds good doesn't it? We probably don't need to think it through, we can always change our minds in six months - on to the next grand projet".
