Re: What are you watching tonight?
Olympus Has Fallen isn't that bad. Hilarious that that and White House Down have fallen within 6 months of each other.
Watched a few likely Oscar nominated films recently.
First was 12 Years a Slave. Excellent film. if a little overrated. Definitely deserves another watch and I think on second viewing I'll enjoy it even more.
Next up was American Hustle. Plot was lacking, but picked up in the second half and the ending was very good. The cast, however, were fantastic. Don't think I've seen a film were so many big hitters pull off individually exceptional performances. Bale, Cooper, Renner, Lawrence and in particular Amy Adams all brilliant. Adams has to be a shoe in for an Oscar for best female. Outstanding.
My favourite of the lot was Her, with Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Adams. It's about a guy who falls in love with his operating system (played by Johansson, and only ever appears by voice). Phoenix really is the most underrated actor and has been for a long time. Not many films will top Her this year, although with a slightly better ending I doubt no film will have topped it.
One film that might top it is The Wolf of Wall Street which I shall be watching later. Got Walter Mitty to watch too which I'm expecting to be good.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Wolf of Wall Street does look good, but it doesn't look edgy enough or will have enough saves or disabled people to win an Oscar. Snobbish bastards always pick a shit film that's 5 hours long to appear cool and "against the main".
Di Caprio is mint though. Everything he's in is top notch.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
I've read that the judges won't even watch it.
Apparently the race for Best Picture is between 12 Years and Gravity. Out of the two, I enjoyed Gravity more due to the amazing 3D effects, but I'm not sure that makes it good enough for Best Picture. My personal choice is Her.
Best Actor is apparently going to be between Eljifor (12 Years), Redford (All is Lost), Dern (Nebraksa) and Hanks (Captain Phillips). Out of those I'd go for Hanks but for me Phoenix just about pips him, I think.

Can’t beat DVD screener season!
It’s amazing how many of these actors can be in two films at the same time, Amy Adams in Hustle and Her, Bale in Out of the Furnace and Hustle, most impressively Matthew McConaughey in Wolf and Dallas Buyers Club.
12 years a Slave is not over-rated. Its jaw droopingly good

I said a 'little' overrated, and I did say it was excellent but it's being billed as one of the greatest films ever which is quite the tag to have, so it's hard not to go into it with very high expectations.

Fair dos. Another one on there is All is Lost. Really liked that. Pretty bold move making a full length feature with no dialogue, or music come to think? But I think it pays off.

That's definitely on the list. Probably mentioned on here before that I love films at sea and this is right up my street. Didn't know there was no dialogue though, that makes me want to see it more strangely. Redford is meant to be excellent in it.General Mannerheim wrote:Fair dos. Another one on there is All is Lost. Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Well, what do you know. The Wolf of Wall Street ended up being better than Her. One of the best films I've ever seen.
Everyone needs to see it.
