I'm of to Mexico February 17, Worthy, to the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort and Spa. Will let you know how it goes. Should see Chichen Itza and Tulum.Worthy4England wrote:Having rather enjoyed Mexico last year, I've just booked to go again, this.

Re: Summer Holidays
Looks like about three miles apart. You appear to have half a dozen pools and a golf course nearby (judging from the satellite picture). This will be our first all-inclusive on the Mayan Riviera. My friend who recommended Sirenis also suggested Grand Bahia, which he said was huge and occasionally one took a bus round the place - though Akumal is right on the beach. Was this the same one you went to before?Worthy4England wrote:Lovely. No, last year we were in the Iberostar Tucan. Which was excellent, but a short way further down the coast, we might have gone there again, but for some reason the Travel Co, seems to be reigning back on it from Apr 2014, and Akumal is nearer the Playa Del Carmen "strip".Montreal Wanderer wrote:Looks like about three miles apart. The golf course is free for hotel guests, but they charge an arm and a leg to hire the buggy - not that this had any bearing of course.

Re: Summer Holidays
Not really a summer holiday but we're off to Germany in March for my brother in law's wedding. We'll be flying to Hannover and travelling to Winsen for the wedding. Any recommendations as to what to see and do in that part of the world are welcome!

Sounds like it's worth looking forward to, summer or not. I'm sure it will be great, wonderful setting for such an occasion.William the White wrote:Not summer, but today I booked a 4 day city break in Istanbul with a woman I love...

Erm, we might be going to Venice. Wasn't my idea. Please don't bother to check my previous comments re the place.

Re: Summer Holidays
Not exactly summer, but later this month 8 of us are going to centre parks in the Lakes for 4 days for my dads 60th.
I can't bloody wait. Always wanted to go, as I've only heard good things. Surprisingly reasonable too. For a 4 double bedroom house/cabin thing, it worked out less than £150 per couple and that includes the little 'un too. In the summer though, that figure could go up ten fold.

I always say id like to start taking more cultural holidays, but when it comes down to it i really cant be arsed. Maybe when im retired i will, or at least when the kids have grown up – but all i wanna do is lay by a pool in a luxurious but characterless all inclusive resort; supping; reading; eating and just being together. 2 weeks in Turkey for us!
Those Mexican places look spot on, but might be a bit far for the bairns to fly... doesn’t seem much dearer than what we paid for turkey either pfft! When is the best time to go to Mexico?

mibd you .... do it in 3 or 4 day chunks are your legs will drop off ... and you can only take in SO much beauty at a go.

So long as you avoid the hot-spots at peak times and appreciate that now and again some water may get clogged up I cannot fault the place.

Re: Summer Holidays
Worthy tends to go in the Summer being an Englishman with a mad dog. Many find it too hot, but he can give his view since I haven't been then. If you go to the Caribbean side (Mayan cultural stuff available) it is best to avoid hurricane season which goes up to early November. Any time from January through April is high season. If you can take off at the last minute you can get excellent deals. Recently I saw a week at an all-inclusive including airfare for $350. Alas, most people require more lead time.General Mannerheim wrote:I always say id like to start taking more cultural holidays, but when it comes down to it i really cant be arsed. The flights for the nippers might be a stretch - you're in the air 9.5 hours, so it's a long day.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Worthy tends to go in the Summer being an Englishman with a mad dog. I go in the English summer, largely because that's when it makes most sense with our young 'un, and I wouldn't really want to go before April as I generally don't need the break then, from work, after Christmas.
If I was picking solely on the basis of weather, I'd go as Monty suggests, through Jan/April. Late July/August was fine last year - tropical rain for maybe 15 minutes some days (from isolated clouds - so still sunny). But it does get quite humid mid-afternoon and at night.
For General's benefit, we didn't need to go to the bar much last year as they bring it to you (for a small gratuity)

There's quite a lot of active stuff to do, if you want a change, so they have zip-lining, jungle safari's, cenote diving etc.

Re: Summer Holidays
Some numpty the other day was asking about the weather here in July. You see, they go to Spain and when it hits 40c there they "handle it well and like it". I tried to explain that comparing a Mediterranean summer to a Middle East summer would be a bit stupid. I explained that it would likely be like opening an oven door and sticking your head in. I then went on to explain that due to Ramadan they would not be able to eat and drink whenever they wish, that many places would be closed during the day and there would be nothing to do bar shopping malls (where stuff costs more than the UK).
Their response? "Great. I'll get a good tan then"! I suggested an insurance policy that doesn't exclude stupidity and shook my head
