I read something once about climbers snapping the frozen fingers off of the dearly departed so as to keep as souvenirs. Is that right?

Anecdotally correct, but I believe that particularly tale came from Kachenjunga rather than Everest...

It's a little known fact that the sheepdog commands "Come by" and "Away to me" refer not to directional travel in a straight line as in come here and go away, but are in relation to rotational movement. If you imagine a very large clock face superimposed on the ground, with the handler standing at six o'clock, then the sheepdog will be standing anywhere between seven oclock and five oclock. If it's at twelve oclock, say, and you shout "Come by", it will sweep around the edges of the clock in a clockwise direction (when looked at from the handlers perspective), and continue to do so until the down command is given. "Away to me" and it will travel anticlockwise". The mnemomic is easy to remember as well, as the initial letters of the commands equal the direction required thus Come by = Clockwise, while Away to me = Anticlockwise.

How does it know how big the clock is?

It depends on the dog, and the handler has to know how each dog reacts, but basically in the best trial dogs you leave it up to the dog - it judges how far away the field boundaries are, how large the group of sheep between it and you is, and how densely scattered they are. If there are no sheep visible they fit the clock into the field boundaries. if there is a small dense group of sheep, they make the clock just large enough so they can run around the perimeter without 'lifting' the sheep.

The plural of beef is...beeves.

It makes sense but just seems feckin weird.

Beeves is archaic. Beefs is also somewhat archaic. The plural of beef, in as much as it has a plural, is beef - e.g. we drove some beef up to the market.

Always found the French (and Spanish) description of us Brits as "rosbifs" funny.
(apparently it goes back to the middle ages when we were experts at "roasting the beef")

I wonder if they find our description of the French as Cheese-eating surrender monkeys, or the Spanish as Bull-Killing Tomato throwers equally hilarious?

I can confirm that the majority of French-types don't find the "Cheese eating surrender monkey" line at all amusing. No matter how much you repeat it to them. No sense of humour if you ask me.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

It must be the way you say it. Have you tried saying it with a French accent?

Player throws two darts, puts both in treble twenty, 120 scored. Throws third dart and finishes with a score of 60? Adrian Lewis just did it. His last dart didn't stick in the board and knocked one of the others out as well. He still won that game though:wink:
