Re: Holden on to nothing?
When I did mine [and it was only by standing on a empty wine bottle] that had been discarded the pain was incredible and it felt like a red hot poker was being run up the back of my leg.I heard the snap, like a tree branch snapping. It was repaired by a real good surgeon at Chorley and I know for sure that I will never be the same as pre-injury."Mentally" it,s always there in the back of my mind that it could go again, and iv,e done a lot of physio and attempts at running since then, and although I would love to see Stu Holden pull on that shirt for us,I am absolutely certain that he could never be as he was before "EVANS"..BWFC_Insane wrote:And if you have that fear in a supermarket.....imagine on a football field.jonnycooper wrote:I had a similar injury to Stu's original Evans one 3years ago'and I do believe that he would never have gotten back to the player he was.Admittedly I dont play sport for a living but I had a fantastic Surgeon who did a great job;I have had extensive physio'(but) that fear is always sat there in the back of my mind that its gonna go again. When I'm in Sainsburys I'm always checking to make sure no-ones gonna run into the back of me with a trolley. You are just not the same(in the head)as you were pre-injury. I wish him every success 'I just can't see him getting that now on the football field.
What is it like, is it painful or feel weak or is it simply the mental side of things?

Holden promised role at Reebok by DF if he has to give up playing.

I like what Freedman says but I wouldn't say that is exactly a promise of anything.Riviman wrote:http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wa ... _/?ref=mac

I definitely think should Holden need further lengthy recovery he should think about taking up coaching and Bolton should fund him to do that and offer him some sort of role but that doesn't exactly state that will be the case. And of course Holden possibly, even probably may want to return to the USA.

With every respect to the lad for his playing ability, he's just a young man and a player. What makes you think he has the ability to coach at top level, other than doing badges etc, that thousands of others do? Just asking....BWFC_Insane wrote:I like what Freedman says but I wouldn't say that is exactly a promise of anything.Riviman wrote:http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wa ... _/?ref=mac

You do have to say that he seems to have an air of positivity which is remarkable. Remarkable and possibly just a bit irritating if you had to tolerate it close up for too long. But it is in the nature of a sports coach so I'd be far from surprised if he was to be able to do that. He also has the style, especially in the US, to be a media person .... what a shame he hasn't done Media Studies somewhere !!
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Which would normally be my response to people asking for ex-players to get coaching roles simply because they used to play for us. I'd agree in general.TANGODANCER wrote:With every respect to the lad for his playing ability, he's just a young man and a player. The thing with Holden is two-fold I guess. Firstly, being that he's been terribly unlucky with injury and whilst that doesn't mean the club should be doing him any favours I think it is an exceptional set of circumstances and even if it only offers a small amount of good PR for the club, backing Holden and helping him out, should his playing career be over, in my book wouldn't be a bad thing. And right now a little good PR wouldn't hurt.
Secondly as bobo says the spirit and attitude Holden possesses can only be a positive to the club and can only help perhaps inspire younger players or give them a positive role model. He may be absolutely thick as a brick and useless as a coach - but in this one isolated case I'd like him to be given a chance if that is what he wants to do.

Re: Holden on to nothing?
He's played at an exceptionally high level. He clearly knows the game. So I wouldn't put him in the same bracket of "thousands of others".
Can he translate that knowledge and ability to coaching? Who knows. What I will say though, is that his attitude, drive, positivity and knowledge of the game and the club will most definitely rub off on others. Coaches don't have to be like managers. They don't have to detach themselves from the group in the same way.
I'm all for it, if he wants it.

Re: Holden on to nothing?
I know even less about Stuart Holden than I do about Freedman. Yet I'm fairly sure there are more 'roles at the football club' that don't require 'coaching badges' than those that do.

Re: Holden on to nothing?
My comment was in no way detrimental to a great lad and a real talent that, through no fault of his own is in jeopardy as a career. I'd love to see him find a niche at Bolton.

Worth noting also that some of the best coaches and managers had shortened playing careers. You wouldn't put it past Holden to turn the negative of enforced retirement (if so...) into the positive of early badges, education etc.
The very best of luck to him whatever he does. I also hope it's beneficial to Bolton but after this much heartbreak for the bloke the club's concerns almost seem secondary.

It was a very fair comment TD. There isn't a right or wrong. You're not being callous to ask that question. It is something I would normally be asking myself.....TANGODANCER wrote:My comment was in no way detrimental to a great lad and a real talent that, through no fault of his own is in jeopardy as a career. Zico seems to be doing his own job easily, but I suppose his mate Didsy might go managing a first team sometime soon. He was tempted by Bury, and yes that may be the first time in recorded history those three words have been written in that order.jaffka wrote:he could do zico's job easily

I also think that if he's around the club with a smile on his face after what he's had to contend with, then others ought to be inspired by his attitude and it should be infectious. He's obviously very bright and driven and DF sees something in him. He could be the new Robbie Blake!

Re: Holden on to nothing?
At the BWSA meeting on Tuesday night with Mills and Ream, they were asked about Holden as he'd done his knee the night before, they said that he was a great guy to have around the place, even when injured. Ream said that SH aways had such a positive outlook on life that it rubbed off on everyone esle. Mind you he did also say that he can be annoyingly loud at times !!!
Both players also agreed that playing with 2 up front was the way to go particularly with Juke and Joe Mason. They said it was great that they know if they hit a ball up to Juke it will stick and that Mason and the midfield then make the necessary runs. Mason having 5 one on ones with the keeper in 2 games, as Ream said " unkown of here "!!!!

Clearly Meeja Studiz is the way forward.
