I fail to see how you can claim Scotand wants out until we see the result of the referendum in autumn. Despite the polls suggesting otherwise, I don't know what the outcome will be. I'm pretty sure you don't either.BWFC_Insane wrote:No wonder Scotland want out....

Can you share with us details of not only this newly hatched rolling stock plan but more incredibly as to how you know that ""Scotland want out"?BWFC_Insane wrote:Notice that the government have a newly hatched plan to remove train rolling stock from already overcrowded North West trains and give them to the South East. Bolton MPs are appealing against this.
Clearly the North West doesn't get a bad deal at all. It is entirely fair..............
If you're not in the South East you don't count. No wonder Scotland want out....
You really are on the in of everything?! It's insane.

So, Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney has said if we don't let them keep the pound, they will walk away debt free. According to Swinney, they would burden the rest of the UK with the £100 Billion pound debt Scotland would normally have to take. So basically they are trying to hold us over a barrel.
I know there is a lot of posturing and playing politics but could they do that?

Stirling isn't an asset, so they can't actually have it. It's not tradeable. Not inviting them to be party to it, would cause them more pain than they coul probably afford. Yeah, alright, they can have it.
Actually, we could give them the U K pound, and move the remainder of the UK to something called "Not the UK pound". Not suggesting we should, because it would be a pain in the ass. Our Bank the BoE, then doesn't control Stirling anymore and their Bank can't because they don't have one. It's as much about the Bank as the currency itself, but the remainder of the UK leaving for its own currency, which they couldn't argue they could stop us doing very convincingly, would probably have a similar effect.

This is what I mean by "cake and eat it" from the Salmon. We want independence, we want to run our own country ... economy ... taxes ... laws. But we'll use the £, whether you like it or not. We'll hide under your skirt, we'll expect you to cover our ass when our spending plans can't be met.

Outstanding questions I have if Scotland says Yes.
Will the BBC still exist
and will the English version edit Scotland off the weather maps?
Will Scotland have to have its own National Lotto?
Will UKIP change its name?
Will the Queen still be Queen of Scotland or will they crown a Stuart monarch?

Quite a lot of that covered in here. Funny and informative. I watched it over the weekend.

Still there is no reason why the Queen can't be Queen of an independent Scotland - she is Queen of Canada for example.
The United Kingdom would still exist (England and Northern Ireland) but I'm not so sure about Great Britain. Perhaps we will become the United Kingdom of NotsoGreat Britain and Northern Ireland. No reason why the adjective British should be dropped IMHO.

Re: You take the high road...
Britain as I've always understood it is the big island. So England, Scotland and Wales. The 'Great' is simply to distinguish between this bit and Brittany. I know it gets mixed up politically and everyone understands what people mean when they use 'Great Britain' and 'the UK' interchangeably, but that's what I thought it meant. If so, most sensible name IMO would be the United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain is the main isle of the British isles which includes Ireland.
Eire is a nation that occupies some of Ireland but claims all of it. Northern Ireland is a province and not a country. The United bit came about because two kingdoms joined - England and Scotland. Hence the UK of Great Britain refers to England and Scotland alone. Northern Ireland is tacked on as a province. Wales isn't even mentioned because it is a principality, and though a country, technically forms part of the nation that is the kingdom of England. Which is why your suggestion sucks

So you agree with me
? On what 'Britain' is anyway.
IIRC, 'Eire' is not a nation. It's quite specifically 'Ireland', not 'Eire' or 'The Republic of Ireland'. There were a lot of people who gave a massive shit about this, for some reason.
I'm f*cked if I know what the difference between 'nation' and 'country' is if 'nation' doesn't mean 'nation state', in which case England (even inc Wales) is not a 'nation'.
It seems we agree they couldn't call it the 'UK of Great Britain...' anymore as Scotland is part of Great Britain. And argue all you like about Wales' status, but good luck getting 'The UK of England and Northern Ireland' to fly!

You are missing several points... by miles. There will be no United Kingdom of anything. The only kingdoms in the equation are Scotland and England.Prufrock wrote:So you agree with me? On what 'Britain' is anyway.

A country is a place that has international status as an entity. A nation is a country that is recognised as an independent and sovereign entity by the UN.
