Whiteman is an inspirational bloke as well, fair play to him for what he achieved, as well as for carrying on after he did it. He only ran a 4:03 mile last season aged 41 though, tut.

Re: The athletics/running thread
My sister dug out another old away shirt belonging to her husband for me to run parkrun in. It's the old yellow pin striped one, mid 90s I think. In other news I had a shave since my last parkrun but have since regrown my beard.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Playing football tonight and felt something tweak at the tip of my calf. Thought it was cramp or my hamstring at first but when I got home my thigh is killing and is now twice the size if my right one. Had ice on and got it elevated. Any ideas as to what it is?

You got a pain in your calf and now your thigh is swollen?
Don't know. Could be a torn Soleus which is bleeding out.
It could be your hamstring. Is there a hard lump at the back of your knee?
I'd go and see a physio or get to A&E. Get some medical advice. Soon.
Re: The athletics/running thread
Pretty sure its a quad strain/tear. Calf was just cramp. NHS website said I don't need to go to A &E just RICE.
So frustrating. I've been having weird heart palpitations for a couple of months so not done any exercise bar the odd game of football for nearly three months, finally fixed so went out running Tues and Weds involving the bitch hill, and then football last night.
I think i've pulled/torn it in the same place i had a dead leg before Xmas. Got clattered early first half yesterday but ran it off and think a combination of it still being weak from before Xmas, getting clattered, and trying to do too much too soon coming back meant it's gone.
Swelling has gone down a bit. Hopefully only a couple of weeks out.

You should go swiming for a week or two before you start to do anything too energetic after a lay off, just to get things moving.Prufrock wrote:Pretty sure its a quad strain/tear. Calf was just cramp. NHS website said I don't need to go to A &E just RICE.

I've been monitoring you lot on here, and it's not only you Pru, but quite a few of yers. You all get these weird (to me) 'complications'. I've never had anything like half of the stuff you lot get. My only injuries are scrapes and bruises - I don't 'tweak' anything or get 'swellings' or pulled this and torn that and splinted others!Prufrock wrote:Pretty sure its a quad strain/tear. Is this because
a) I'm a weird alien life form, and I need to speak to my mother.
b) You lot do too much of this obviously physically distressing sporty sciency bollox
c) Some other reason that is neither a nor b
?

d. None of the above. We put the effort in.
Re: The athletics/running thread

The weird heart palpitations aside (the docs latest theory is that that's a diet thing) they're sports things. Walk to the pub and the occasional fight with an e-ciger aren't likely to lead to many muscle tears

Re: The athletics/running thread
Y'see that's assuming I don't do sporty stuff... I do at least one marathon/ half marathon a year, plus two definite fell runs annually and up to ten other random competitive runs, and walk beyond ten miles each and every single weekend, and more usually in the twenty/ twenty five mile range with a minimum of four forty milers every single year. And all on No Training Whatsoever... My theory is this, mentally all the races and walks I do I just categorise them, the races and walks themselves, as my training. What I'm training for is LIFE.Prufrock wrote:.

Re: The athletics/running thread

Some people are lucky. I've never had any injuries until this season. One came from over doing it, one was a contact injury, one a combination of the two.
I'm not convinced about the 'mental' aspect. My left thigh is currently twice the size of my right. There's nothing mental about that.

Well done. You're fantastic. We've obviously been doing it wrong all these years. What were we thinking?

Re: The athletics/running thread
I'm not denying you've got a physical symptom...not at all. My thesis, if you like, is that there are far too many pre-physical exercises these days. Everybody seems to get injured. In The Good Old Days, Dr Roger Bannister would have finished his pipe, donned his shorts, turned around to Chris and said someat like "OK Chatters, last to the finishing line gets the teas in whato" and orfff they'd trot. Not today though, oh no, far too much at stake, must have the right balance of electrolytes, warm up in the proscribed manner, wearing the correct gear that's been assessed for your particular gait, and all dependent if you've managed your fartlek program for the previous twenty four hour adjusted for circadian rhythm cycle etc etcPrufrock wrote:fair enough.
