At risk of ignoring the binary pro-Dougie/anti-Dougie thing, it is quite amusing to think that Mills & Ream would have been out of town on a rail had DF had his way. That they stayed and improved (to whatever extent, from whatever base) is a credit to their professionalism and to the coaching staff. Improving a team by replacing players is one thing, but it's always more impressive to improve the same set of players - as has been done short-term by Pulis at Palace and long-term at Everton by Martinez, who I'll happily admit I underestimated.

Freedman hasn't improved Ream, I don't think. His performances in the Premier League were as good or better than what we're seeing now, although his form did dip at one point so maybe Freedman deserves credit for getting him focused again.

Craig Davies is nowhere near the level of Mason. It's why he's a league one player and signed for us on league one wages.

Dougie's latest "genius" statement in todays BEN is that "the club is now scouting for players for next Jan's transfer window in Australia, Switzerland and Norway as the clubs stats show thats where the best value for money players are"????
He also goes on to say that the club "finished scouting for players for this summers transfer window at the end of Feb"?????

Now I may sound stupid here, but surely how can you decide in Feb, which players you want to go for in the summer? Does that mean he's not going to look at anybody who may become available after Feb if he's not already scouted them???

Yeah, that's bizarre. Sounds smug, and counterintuitive: not only could (as you say) new players become available, but old "approved" ones could hit terrible form, or previously rejected ones show a marked improvement.

I don't think his quotes rule out looking at players becoming available... he has not said that he has closed the list of players he might go for - what he has said is that he has done the scouting in advance...

what I suspect he means is something entirely uncontroversial and normal - that he has concluded a programmed period of planned proactive scouting - but that (as usual) if there are other deals to be done then (of course) he will look at them.

I, for one, am quite glad he is looking in markets we haven't exploited or ages... to do so - you have to do it when their leagues are playing and in advance to get a head start...

I realise this doesn't help the dougie is an insane, clueless moron argument (sorry!) - but - hey - not everything that he does or says has to be forced to fit that particular mould...

You might be right, but I've been reading/hearing a lot of this sort of stuff. Course, by this time next year they might be in midtable, having lost Lukaku/Barry/Deulofeu and been bogged down by Europa travails...

Pulis has maximised returns from a frankly awful squad; I'm less convinced he can build an impressive squad without significant investment (or indeed with it, judging by some Stoke signings).

The Pulis one is interesting. He doesn't seem charismatic but seems to have the trick or system of getting the most out a team/ individuals, so that the team is stronger than the quality of the individuals would suggest it should be. Obviously he did it at stoke, and just like us under sam, then had the brickbats thrown and labels attached.

As you say DSB he spent a lot of money - on a lot of meh players - but result wise gave stoke one of their most successful periods, albeit the results v style/ entertainment argument see-sawed one way and t'other and eventually pitched him out.

I see lots of parallels between us and stoke. Money is spent as a gamble to stay in the prem, but theres also the premium that smallish, provincial, non media sexy clubs have to pay to get players to go there. It all makes the quality of players that BSA managed to buy into his system and our club the more remarkable.

Always provided of course that those fresh, young faces can play football better than the ones we have at the moment. Nearly all Dougie's statements are complaints about something/someone
at the club. He never seems to encourage players or sound rallying calls. Me, I rather see someone who gets behind his players in public and bollocks them in private. I still maintain that "my way or the highway" only applies when that "my way" is seen to be the best way.
