Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
Went shit-hole hunting today, in our green and pleasant land, and collected a few locations on route Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall, Haslingden, Burnley, Nelson, Clolne etc, mainly by motorway it must be said. Actually I was badgered by wife, daughter and son-in-law to visit Winfields and Boundary Mill with a bait of Haddock, chips, mushies and a brew at Banny's afterwards. What a beautiful day, sun beaming down and mother nature in her best green frock. Couple of disappointments, I couldn't persuade one of the staff at Boundary to have a fire drill, and there wasn't even one shit-hole in sight. Quite the reverse, in fact.

Your not going to try and con us into thinking that Burnley, Nelson or Colne are nice in anyway. I think we should take this to a poll and ask the great people of this forum if any of the three towns I mentioned from you list are sh*tholes I guarantee you the majority of people will say at least one of them is.TANGODANCER wrote:Went shit-hole hunting today, in our green and pleasant land, and collected a few locations on route Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall, Haslingden, Burnley, Nelson, Clolne etc, mainly by motorway it must be said. Dan, stop it...please. You can't base your opinion of towns on a flying visit or from going to a football match. How may times have you visited parks, museums, churches, pubs, castles or even town centre places of interest in any of the places you label "shitholes"? The three you mention are all decent places unless you specialise in touring round rough-arse housing estates..hey, every town has at least one. Get real man.bwfcdan94 wrote:Your not going to try and con us into thinking that Burnley, Nelson or Colne are nice in anyway. I went to Colne for the Rhythm and Blues Festival last year, nice place Dan, so there! Not a big fan of Burnley, nor am I an expert on it. Nelson I can't comment on other than to say it was either there or Bacup that a colleague of mine claimed he had seen a man taking a sheep for a walk on a lead.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

FFFNNAAARRRRR!!!!!

(sorry just sounds a bit rude)
Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I base my opinions on 3 visits to Burnley lasting in total about 18 hours, Nelson I will say I spent literally an hour in, Colne I made the decision to go to after being informed by a man from Burnley at Accrington station that people from Burnley didn't like Colne because it was to ruff so spent a day there. While I am willing to give some leeway that I haven't spent enough time in Colne or Nelson, having visited Burnley in 2009, 2010 and 2012 I can honestly say that it is a dump although I will admit that it was better in 2012 then in 2010. I disagree with you when you say every town has a rough housing estate. While were at it I will admit that I haven't seen enough of Middlesbrough to call it a s**thole unlike Redcar which I have and also have horror stories from relatives and a friend whose brother lives in Redcar as well as the many visits I have made to judge it on.TANGODANCER wrote:Dan, stop it...please. Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
if you are ever going to make an impact on this issue, Dan, I think you might have to be a bit more specific about how you define towns as "sh*tholes"..
it seems (as you write) usually to be based on one or more of the following..
1) there are poor people there and it might be economically disadvantaged
2) you noticed an imaginary funny chemical smell in the air
3) there was summat in the papers about a sicko doing summat bad there
4) the town centre looks run down
is that the extent of your yardstick?
I have lived in lots of places (Burnley being one of them)... as i have said before - the quality of life in a place is not (I think) primarily marked by the economic conditions of a town - but by the people you know there and the communities you belong to - which make up the larger part of the experiences you have there. This is why I have suggested you can't seriously make that kind of judgement about a place (or, at least - not as freely as you do) unless you have actually lived there...
quite often it also depends upon what you put in.. if you put nothing in - you'll get nothing out... (OK - so that's a crude cliche - but it contains a nugget of truth that you might wish to mull over...)

Have you ever been to Reading and Swindon?
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

I cant be bothered to be honest Bish. I could give you a long list of incidents and explain how it is a community more than any other in Britain filled with racial hate, but what would be the point?thebish wrote:if you are ever going to make an impact on this issue, Dan, I think you might have to be a bit more specific about how you define towns as "sh*tholes"..

equally - perhaps you could try not to be so bothered about declaring to all and sundry which towns you believe are sh*tholes - what would be the point?? win-win!!
