Oops, it's a remake of District 13, forget what they've called it.wigan white wrote:Is this some kind of quiz??? Give us a clue as to which film it is?Beefheart wrote:Forgot to mention, when last at the cinema I noticed a trailer for what has to be one of the most pointless remakes. It looks almost identical to the original, with the only discernable difference being the location. I'm not sure, but I think they've even used the same giant guy for that fight scene.

Found a BBC3 series called 'Black Orphan'. Then that I'd missed 6 episodes. Had great fun catching up.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Orphan Black? the one about the woman who takes on the identity of a woman who she kinda looks like after the other one jumps in front of a train?bobo the clown wrote:Found a BBC3 series called 'Black Orphan'. Then that I'd missed 6 episodes. Had great fun catching up.

Just caught part two of Jamaica Inn on BBCi player so I can watch the final part at 9-0 tonight. Sound, especially on the first part, was awful, so much so that a lot of folk complained. Hope it's better tonight. Enjoying so far even though I know the story.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Duly watched Jamaica Inn conclude. Some good acting, particularly by Sean Harris as the villain, and the scenes in the sea made me shiver just watching and were very authentic. It must have been freezing as it was filmed mainly in location off the Cornish coast. Brutal and disturbing in parts but I enjoyed it. Well worth a watch if you like period dramas.

On the recco of Bruce Rioja, courtesy of LF, we watched Ken Loach's The Angels Share.
This sees Loach in more amiable mood than usual, and less overtly political, but the film is a delightful heist story of a bunch of young Glasgow losers and petty criminals hatching a half-baked plan to steal the most valuable cask of malt whisky ever made (guide price, one million pounds).
Very enjoyable. Good recco, Bruce.
Was in Glaswegian English. Unfortunately no sub titles...
Though the next two are in French and Spanish...

I did that with Pointless, had to admit it to my mate in the end. Felt like such a fraud.Prufrock wrote:First one of Only Connect on iplayer.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Ep 4 of The Crimson Field and, while they are handling the multiple plots with real skill the stories themselves have descended into soap. The promise of the first two episodes as the characters dealt with the horrors of war has now turned to two love stories - both stretching credulity, and a hint of something perverse in matron's sexual preferences. Add to that a barely credible story of the 'lucky thirteen' who get barely a scratch and whose elder citizen is known as 'dad' and TWO cases of blackmail in one episode...
I'm feeling 'I've started so I'll finish' with this series. But another episode like this and I'll be changing my mind...

^ I haven't watched any of that yet, but have it all recorded. May or may not bother. On a similar theme though I happened to catch the last hour of Generation War: on BBC2 on Saturday evening. This is the war as told by a German company, something of a turning point in German TV apparently, an introspective by the current generation into that generation, and is in subtitles. It deals with the euphoria of the German advance into Russia and almost on to Moscow following the progress of five friends, one of them a Jew in Berlin and another a nurse attached to a field hospital. Powerful and emotive stuff with the early days of the Jewish question and the Ukraine 'special units' central to the story. The first ep available on iPlayer and second on next Saturday evening. Well worth catching!

Yeah, we caught it, and rated it. Slightly schematic, I thought, and the Jewish thread was hard to swallow, but a promising start.clapton is god wrote:^ I haven't watched any of that yet, but have it all recorded. Lots to like about it, but felt it lacked a bit of something. Still haven't finished watching it. Will do though, think it's worth the effort.wigan white wrote:I know its been discussed previously but caught up on the the last few episodes of "True Detective", what an amazing series, tremendous story and tremendous acting. Its a linking in well to the climax which a bloke at work spoiled for me, plus hes watched most of the 2nd series from dodgy downloads and says some of the things that happen in series 2 are up there with GOT for shocks!!!LeverEnd wrote:Lots to like about it, but felt it lacked a bit of something. Re: What are you watching tonight?
A pin for the Butterfly. A film I've never heard of, never mind seen. Set in the fifties it all takes place in Stalin's Czecheslovakia amongst communism, Stalinism, capitalism and terror shown through a series of satirical impressions in the form of the political struggle taking place then . Seen through the confused eyes of the child, who resorts to fantasy and imagination to cope with it all, it's a film to think on.
Amazingly it's an all British cast with some fine performances: Ian Bannen, Hugh Lawrie, Gregory Gudgeon, Ian Hogg ,Joan Plowright ,Imogen Stubbs and an amazing child actress (who's probably well grown up by now) ..Florence Hoath ..
Not seen it? Give it a go.
