Interesting comment Spotski. At school we always drew pictures of Jesus like Dartagnan or Roy Rogers in a wig, or somebody. At least we knew he'd look Englishy. Doesn't really register to kids (and obviously not a lot of artists around the world) that he'd be a normal, typical Jewish working class type of person, not even a sixteen times removed citizen of Cheetham Hill or somewhere.

I'm not sure Hirst (on this thread) get's much airplay in terms of being an ""artist" (I know he's had some). For me he's in the same "non-art" bracket.

I think the subject matter of the two of them is different, even though I think they're both non-art. Hirst "I've pickled a cow" is less likely for me to attract as much comment as "here's who I've shagged" which at the very least gets a "so fecking what?" from me.

Precisely. You can't have Jesus looking like some Romanian job seeker just arrived in England's green and pleasant land. What is the world coming to?

Since thoughts seem to have turned to Christianity and Art it is worth recalling that in 2009 The award for Art and Christianity Enquiry was won by Tracey Emin.

This enabled Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral to win the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Arts Award.

This is only one of many awards, honours and distinctions won by Emin. I won't list them all, bit they'd make quite a list.

but among her many extra-mural acts I'm drawn to this one:

Does that Rachel Whitehouse still exist? Did she have a back story too?

That old pink neon again. How to turn a church into a nightclub in one easy lesson.. :)

The Alison Watt piece is absolutely dazzling both as a fitting concept and in execution. .

Hirst is an overweening cock. The small and utterly innocent calf the tw*at carved up had more talent in its little hoof than Hirst, the knobhead, is ever likely to possess. Moreover, the poor unassuming shark, despite being a cartiliginous fishy way down the evolutionary tree would, if it hadn't been sawn in half by the dick, have probably held more profound views on art than Hirst ever could - the tosser.
Balance restored, universe in harmony.
Nothing I like better than an intelligent, perceptive contribution to a discussion.

:conf: contribution to a discussion?? It was an act of justice, a balancing of the yin and yang.

I can't decide whether 'Jon Sharples MMXIV' is genius or preposterous :D!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Not to detract in any way from Mummy's essay, this is a detailed version of the art exhibition currently running at Bolton Museum about two local artists, James Naugton of today and his journey to find the story of Thomas Moran, painter of America's wild west. I 've seen it and mentioned it before but I was in the museum this week and saw it again. It's fascinating and this link story is very comprehensive. I'd urge any local art lovers to go see the exhibition.

Not at all, Tango - that looks great and I'm chuffed it's happening in Bolton.

Apologies about the picture!
