Re Threlkeld - I agree he is part of the squad now. I'm saying he needs game time, so a month to a league 1 club, where he starts every game, would be better than sitting in our development squad. Recall option. Thats all.
Why can't he start the season with us at right back? He probably will have to......
Assuming Baptiste is given up on. Not sure he will be but maybe he'll be part of DF's big summer clear out or the next victim of the "where's Wally" technique.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Young Threlkeld looks no worse than anyone else that we've had playing there - in fact, better than some and he's only a sprog.

Agreed, he's the new Nicky Hunt (only a bit more comfortable with the ball by the looks yesterday)

I thought Threlkeld grew in confidence the longer he was on the pitch he looked handy coming forward in the 2nd half. Was good in the tackle and had a bit of pace, overall a good performance and at least he looked like he wanted to be out there. He will make mistakes but compare him to others who have played in that position this season he is up in the top 2. A starter for me next season!

Totally agree. Hutton is not coming back unless we have a sudden upturn in financial fortunes and Baptiste is just not very good going forward. Threlkeld from what I've seen over the last two games looks like he can defend and provide relief to the defence by carrying the ball forward

I think we could probably get away with playing Threlkeld there next season, but what's the point? We've just given out big contracts to two full-backs. Baptiste has had a shocker of a season, but he must have done something to attain the reputation he had prior to us signing him. No-one is going to buy him either, so it's try again or banish him to the Tyrone Mears club. Tierney likewise wasn't great by any stretch but he's back from injury and will go back into the team.

I'll save picking apart meaningless games we were shit in for pre-season, but my word Trotter and Beckford were poor. Trotter looks scared shitless to try anything that isn't a five yard square ball. Maybe it's playing at home.

I thought Trotter looked like Glen Hoddle next to Dann-Z yesterday. I know he's coming from a low base but he's definitely improving, I'd say.

You know for a fact we've paid out big contracts when Doogie has categorically said we can't offer big contracts? I'll just say I doubt it and if anything you have seen this season suggests that Doogie is not adverse to freezing players out who "aren't up for it" then please show me?

I have no doubt he's up for freezing out players, even ones he's signed. I question if it would be wise.

According to that article from a couple of months ago (the one mostly about Coyle's spending) that everyone has taken as gospel Dougie handed Wheater a three year deal on 20k a week last July. Tierney was on a bosman from a Premier League club and Baptiste's wages were described as 'eye-watering' by Derby's chairman. In the same window we also signed Jay Spearing from Liverpool and Jermaine Beckford who was on 35k a week at Leicester.

Given the average Championship wage is something like 5k a week then yes I would say that it looks like we've definitely paid out big contracts under Dougie.

Agreed. He's better than he was without being particularly good. But I think there is a player in there.

Also agreed on Threlkeld, looked more than adequate to me, and deserves a chance in pre-season to stake his claim.

What's the point? I'd wager the point is that Eddie wants and quite likely demands returns from our academy and that bringing younger players into the first team and seeing a return on that investment both in terms of contributions and fees is probably a major part of the clubs remit over the next few years.

That's the point, bringing our kids through has become an imperative rather than a nice to have.

I haven't seen enough games to make positive comment, (I've never missed a game one way or another, but many of them were on steam radio where the picture's a bit snowy) but it seems to me from what I have seen that it's getting players to play together that's as much our problem as anything else? We can't seem to hold on to the ball and, particularly since we've seen that Juke can take a ball fired at him and actually use it well besides going solo, we've reverted quite bit to long ball whakaday hoofs rather than working anything forward. Beckford just isn't the man for that at all. We can't seem to keep the ball and regularly give the opposition a whole half and a bit to sally forth at us. Our passing is more careless than casually arrogant and even Spearing who does work hard at ball winning, too often gifts it back with sloppy passing. Weighting passes also seems an art that evades many, with some fired like excocet missiles at a player not twenty feet away. Also, the crossfield ball from right back to left wing has become so readable that you could take bets on it. Using the keeper to ease pressure is fine, but it isn't there to make him feel he isn't being left out of things. How many of our attacks finish up back with Bogdan, or is this some new angle on keeping possession?( doesn't work anyway because he only hoofs it into the stand or straight back to the opposition). Just observations but maybe relevant and something Dougie should be looking at? ?

Yes, absolutely. The lad's earned a crack of the whip. Sadly though, I'm still not seeing a player in Rob Hall. Now, I know he's young, and I really am willing him to do well, but I'm just not getting anything back.

I've seen a lot of Threlkeld's name in this thread, but what about Joe Riley? He was all the fuss when he played those couple of Premier League games. If he's fit next season surely he should get a look?

As for Tierney, I thought he was our most consistent player until he got injured. He should be a shoe in at left back.

Hall has a lot of ability. A lot. I question what he's got between his ears though.

Also I get the impression, rightly or wrongly that he is a bit of a big head and thinks he's made it.

He needs to work on the defensive aspect of his game as he offers his full back nowt. And end product.

I've not totally given up on him yet, because his set pieces are good, and he clearly has the talent. It's the attitude I'd like to see improved.

See, I'm almost the opposite. I think that he thinks that he has more ability than he actually has. I'm yet to see him produce anything, though I don't doubt his effort. Are his set pieces good? He took two direct free kicks in the first half yesterday that I thought summed up my opinion of him perfectly - all good intent but piss poor delivery. Please don't get me wrong, as I said earlier, I'm willing the lad to start producing, but I'm yet to see anything worthwhile from him.

I think we are both unconvinced and hoping rather than expecting.

What did you make of young Kellet's brief appearance? Hard to tell I know but he could be useful off the bench for me.....

My take on that. To be given the opportunity, he must have shown at Euxton that he has the requisite skill. Maybe he has it all in spades but is struggling to reproduce on match days.

He wouldn't be the first.

Same. I said earlier that I soooo want it to click. I truly think it will but he needs to be getting a move on.

The free kicks were awful but, like Enoch says ... to.be taking them he must be doing OK with them in training

Hard to tell indeed. I love to see a player run with the ball, and run at defenders especially. However, we must remember that Brum had flung everything forward when he made those breaks yesterday. It'd also have been interesting had he gone for the gap between the defenders on both occasions, but had he done so and cocked it up with players to either side in 3 v 2's then he'd have received flack from some quarters, no doubt. I hope that he's encouraged to run at defenders. Whether he will be or not, I think only time will tell. I'm sure he could be useful off of the bench to do just that, definitely.
