I'm with Councillor Morgan. Can't stand elephants. If we must have an animal, how about a badger? With a nice, questioning latin motto: "Ubi feles sunt?"
Bring back the ribbons. They were good. A nice party feel to them.
And also the white shorts. We had the most successful spell in recent years wearing white shorts. They made us look like Real Madrid. Look what happened when we ditched them - it was all Megson and Gregor Raziak. And ping-pong.
And before Allardyce, we had white shorts in the 70s. Nat Lofthouse introduced them when he was manager. And no one is going to say Lofty was wrong, are they?

Lofty played in navy blue (even black) shorts most of his career. He also wore an elephant badge for the same period. Badgers indeed....pah....Puskas wrote:I'm with Councillor Morgan. Ah, but when Lofty was playing, he didn't have any choice in what kit to wear, did he? Whereas, when he was manager, he did. And he chose to make the team wear white shorts (I'm assuming it was his decision, as I'm fairly sure it was Jimmy Armfield's decision to revert to navy blue when he took over, and it was definitely Allardyce's decision to wear white shorts when he was in charge, so it seems to be the managers that pick these things)TANGODANCER wrote:

Plus, I don't think anyone can deny that our most recent successful spell came wearing white shorts. Swapped them back to navy in 2008 and it's been downhill ever since....

I don't think we were successful BECAUSE we had white shorts. That was a coincidence. It was the players in the white shorts that were more important.Puskas wrote:I'm with Councillor Morgan. Elephants have had connections to Bolton for over 200 years but why is a little unclear. As far as I know we have no connection with badgers. I quite like badgers though.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

Everyone likes badgers (except, possibly, the NFU). That's a good enough connection for me.malcd1 wrote: Elephants have had connections to Bolton for over 200 years but why is a little unclear. As far as I know we have no connection with badgers. I quite like badgers though.
If you really want a stronger one, how about budgies? There are budgies in the Arndale Centre, so they must have a strong connection (I am informed that there are no longer budgies in the Arndale Centre. However, since I haven't lived anywhere near Bolton for around 20 years, this is less important than the fact that there used to be budgies in the Arndale, and I still think there are. They are there in spirit). A budgie on the shirt would be good. And the team could run out to "Crash Course In Brain Surgery".
Or lions. Lions are fierce, indomitable and would, no doubt, be approved by Councillor Morgan. And there are lions on the townhall steps (so there's your connection) - they observe all the arse-showing that occurs. What could be more appropriate than lions?

We should try to avoid anything that in anyway relates us to Millwall so lions is a no go. How about sloth, I mean were are slow and useless as team go.Puskas wrote:Everyone likes badgers (except, possibly, the NFU). Badgers are bastards. Keep away from them. They are black and white .... not navy. Don't be fooled.
Too many people are fooled by their care-free image.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

According to the official description of the Armorial Bearings for the County Borough of Bolton, designed by Major Ottley Perry and registered with the College of Arms in 1890, the Elephant and castle represent Bolton's connection with the old County of Coventry which was founded by the Lancastrian King Henry VI. An Elephant and castle appear on the arms of that City. Bolton's elephant device then also displayed a gold Bishop's Mitre which "was in memory of the long connection of Bolton-le moors with the ancient Diocese of Mercia (which had it's seat in Coventry) and is supposed to have included Bolton.

Look gentlemen, badgers, sloths, lions: all fine animals. But, you cannot beat an elephant. I'll go further and state we need mammoths. Great big hairy ginger beasts. I've said it, Ginger Beasts!
That's not a leopard!

I'm with Puskas - badgers all the way...
i think we once (a long time ago) proved conclusively that there is no work of art that is not improved by the addition of a badger...

I think budgies are probably more dynamic than badgers. So budgies get my vote.

We are not having badgers, budgies, Lions, tigers or ginger shire horses wearing tiaras. We are having an elephant. Thank you.
