In a year there is 365 day, dividing this by 2 gives you 182.5, but we will round it up to 183. In any given year teachers have 52 weekends equating to 104 days, they also have a further 6 weeks for summer holidays(It is more like 7 but let's be fair to the teachers) so they get a further 30 working days off(I have already counted the weekends), added to this a further 4 weeks for Easter and Christmas equating to 20 days, they also get 3 weeks in half terms equating to a further 15 working days. I am not going to include the inset days as apparently teachers have to work during those and I am not going to include bank holiday's as I am sure teachers do pop in over half term for a couple of days to sort various things out so this balances it all out.
104+30+20+15=169
So in essence teachers have 169 days off a year(they spend 169 days inclusive of weekends not working). So my statement that they only spend half the year at work is pretty close to being factually true. I would also point out that in my experience some teachers have a habit of taking many many days off, something you wouldn't be able to get away with in any other profession. Up until recently it was also very very difficult to be sacked as a teacher, certainly in comparison to other professions. So now you can see the working's behind my opinions (I know you teachers love workings). I won't post any further on the matter as GG say's I am digging myself a whole and probably getting on some of your nerves( although Hoboh and Jaffka seem to be loving it).
I am now angry about this, and this is the angry thread...
Hmmmm let me see...
take Head Teacher 'A' and systems manager 'B'
A has 52x2=104 +8 + 60 = 172 days w/e+bank holiday+days when schoolkids have holiday
B has 52x2=104 + 8 + 25 = 137 days w/e+bank holiday+holiday
A therefore has (365-172)+h= 193+h days at work [h is the number of days at work when the kida are on holiday, I've checked A's diary for last year and h= 18; I'm also going to count the days (y) where as representative of the school she has to turn out for the school kids float at the summer fair and the open day for the school allotment during the village's open gardens day. As she only works about six hours on those two days I'll call them half days. So h+y=19
A has (365-172)+19 = 212 days at work
B has 365-137 = 228 days at work
now here's the rub
B works a 37.5 day week
but A opens up the school for the reception class at 8:00am, and is in the school working at 7:30am. She works through, teaching and on two half days doing 'office' work until the kids leave at 3:30pm. She then puts up displays, works through the curriculum plans with other teachers, organises the next days work, writes reports and marks kids books until ~ 6:30pm
which equates to an 11 hour day or a 55 hour week. Except usually on Friday she's home by 5pm, so a 53.5hr week.
Except on the days when there'a a PTFA meeting she has to attend, or a governors (or sub committee) meeting: there are 4 PTFA meetings in a year and 12 governor/sub-committee meetings per year. She isn't home before 10pm on those days which is an extra 16x3.5=56 hrs p/a
So:
A works (212/5 x53.5)+56= 2,268hrs p/a
B works 228/5 x37.5= 1,710 hrs p/a
that's 558 more hours that the teacher works in a year which equates to an extra ~ 70 eight hour days
Go figure as the Yanks would have it
(A is my wife and B is me - these are real hours worked by real people in the real world)
That's not a leopard!

Aye. All the people saying "teaching is so cushy" should just qualify as teachers then they can enjoy that "cushy lifestyle" themselves.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:bwfcdan94 wrote:Being an accountant I thought I would let you see the numbers behind my opinion, so here goes. I know a few teachers, they end up working most days when they are supposedly "on holiday" preparing lesson plans etc. Hadn't even thought about the regular weekend and evening committements in such a job.

It won't matter. I think LLS just pissed away an hour of his life trying to quantify what a teachers life is about. The naysayers will say nay and the defenders will be told they're too close to be objective.
I'm bored with this now.

Yeah, the whole mission statement ethos shit drives me round the f*cking bend. The Police - arresting people an stuff, or the Fire Brigade, putting out fires and shit.
Its all bollox. I worked for one company who's mission statement was about 3 pages long. It could just have said, in short, "making money out of food, drink and accommodation". But then, up til recently, I would have thought that would have been very f*cking obvious to both staff and customers, given that it was a hotel. idiots. Sorry, I mean off-the-charts-moronic-idiots.

I work for an organisation that has a corporate Mission Statement, a corporate code, a corporate vision, corporate values, a corporate colour, a corporate safety logo, a corporate email signature that incorporates our corporate values acronym in our corporate font (although strangely enough the values acronym are not in the corporate colour but are a horrible mishmash of trendy vibrant in-your-face dayglo colours), and corporate templates for everything from Reports through to powerpoint slides - all of which must use the aforementioned corporate colours with the corporate font and feature the corporate vision acronym alongside the corporate safety logo.

In my last company they let the new marketing lass loose on the corporate identity. Many consultants, design gurus and board meetings later we were issued with new business cards. They couldn't understand why we refused to use them - the corner was cut off and they were too dim to understand cutting corners wasn't a good corporate identity
