Re: the Photo thread
Just got back from a couple of weeks in Ibiza. I had a go at some night shots. Who needs a tripod when a hotel towel rested on a rock does just the same job

It was replaced in the day by a bigger shinier bright thing that changed the view to this....Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Nice one Hopeful, but what's that big shiny bright thing in the sky?

It cost £200 new. I had the model below and bought it second hand (probably about £90 or so). It had the sleek lines of a bread van and the balance of a drunken sailor......... Just seen one advertised at £5000....![]()
A great classic Tango; and hopefully the buyer will be showing it at the scooter rally on the IoW Aug bank holiday. It's fast become the biggest scooter weekend in the country (tho the main campsite is just down the road from where I live. It takes 2 weeks for the smell of two stroke to leave the house); and has the best show of classic scooters around. I once refused to buy ( in about '77/78 irrc) a car from my dad's mate for £100, 'cos it only had 3 forward gears. It was a Ford Anglia GT. Pristine condition, lots of chrome, 2 way paint job of light blue & cream, blue leather bench seats.........Doh!

Re: the Photo thread
every now and again I get a yearning to take photos of the moon... i was in my dressing gown - just going to bed when i saw the moon from the landing window - it looked quite close and was a clear night - so i went outside in my dg and snapped a few... moon shots are always a bit trial and error with me - but I was happy with this one - it's nearly full but not quite...

Never tried 'moon shots' before. I guess you need a sturdy tripod, cable release, long lens and a very open aperture?
Out of curiosity (so I can copy what you did of course), could you reveal your settings? Thanks.

my sigma (cos i can't afford Nikon lenses!!) Sigma 500mm lens
f6.3
shutter speed 1/400
ISO 100
sturdy tripod and 10-second delay mode to avoid camera-shake on pressing the button! - my remote was in a bag upstairs somewhere else I'd have used that!
(little bit of white-balance adjustment and high-pass sharpening in Capture NX2)

The 500mm lens is where I come unstuck. The longest I have is 270mm

I've a birthday coming up. Maybe time to treat myself...

i wanted one for ages - and saved up - but Sigma is all I could afford... and - i don't use it much as it's a beggar to carry about and with my technique you can only really shoot stuff that stands still long enough for me to fettle it all together and twiddle all the knobs!
I did take a few decent moon shots with my old sigma 300mm - i reckon you could have a decent go with a 270mm
here's an old one i took with the 300mm... (obv. cropped!)

Re: the Photo thread
just for interest, I have annotated it so that you couold find your way around should you end up stranded there!

Re: the Photo thread
Might have a try at that. I only have a 200mm lens, but it is Nikon
and I do have 36mp to play with so it'll stand a good crop in.

Re: the Photo thread
took the dog out and noticed it was full moon - it was low in the sky and a spooky yellow colour! so - ran back and got my kit!

That's not a spooky yellow, that's all the e-ciggie staining from the Mare Vaporum.

Re: the Photo thread
A friend of mine posted this on FB so I thought I'd share it simply because it's both stunning and fascinating. Well I think so anyway.
Although she is now a photographer it's not one of here own, but who cares?
