I think that is true for probably 15 or 16 sides in this league. Find a regular goalscorer who fits how you want to play and you're in with a chance.Prufrock wrote:I think we're a striker away from being capable of a top 6 finish. Squad as it stands seems a bit top of the bottom half to me.
But that is the problem everyone is just that one striker away.....

Which would of course would mean that no-one will finish in the top 6 places. Which they won't.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
You only have to look how much difference Juke made last season. Brought better out of other players too. Where would Burnley have finished if you took Ings and Vokes out for Craig Davies and Beckford last season? Probably halfway down the league at best.Prufrock wrote:though I think you overstate it. One striker is going to be enough for a Rotherham or a Charlton. Blackburn have had that striker for two years and still not managed it. But yeah, plenty teams out there who with a little more could do it. We're one of them. Think Boris is right about luck (though probs a little harsh on Liam 'named to play for this club' Trotter). Injuries up top in particular would screw us. Get lucky and we might get there.
Obviously it isn't always a striker teams are missing. I just meant that there isn't a huge gap between teams in this league and one or two key players can make a huge difference.

See, statements like that always worry me, unless of course it means there isn't an opposing team with the same ideas.BWFC_Insane wrote:I think that is true for probably 15 or 16 sides in this league. So who are the 6 teams who have the perfect squad right now then? And the only 2 who will be relegated? Its getting tedious hearing the ready made excuses again and again. We have invested heavily in our squad. Yet we're always jam tomorrow.

You're going to have to run that by me. Investment from where? And spent on whom? I'm willing to be that when the accounts are released it will show that we've done the exact opposite.Lord Kangana wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:I can see that maths isn't your strong point......Lord Kangana wrote:Which would of course would mean that no-one will finish in the top 6 places. Arse. For a kick off, we've been promoted with Ian pre-match-warm-up-of-3-mixed-kebabs-and-a-keg-of-ale Marshall in the past. So lets cut the crap with excuses.
And secondly, we've wasted big money ("at this level", if we need the weasel words) on the like of Baptiste and Beckford. Then resigned half the shite Coyle left, that was supposedly at the root cause of our downfall. Its all bollox. We've got none because Dougie pissed what he had up a wall, making exactly the same mistakes as his predecessor. Now you're moaning we've got none.

You often don't have to invest big sums, to be nearer the top of the league in the Championship - sure there are always outliers like Newcastle etc. that make the odd appearance.BWFC_Insane wrote:You're going to have to run that by me. Burnely's wage bill was around 11m last season - I bet we're a long way from that. Hall, Wilkinson, Beckford, Spearing, Lee-Barrett, Bastos all got some sort of fee - Spearing around 3m? Beckford around 1m. Then we have the money we already had invested in some players who haven't gone away - CYL £2.2m, Mavies £1m? Cravies £300k, Matt Mills, Medo, Baptiste yadda, yadda.
That will be more than many teams have spent in the last 18 months in this division - that's without going into Coyle's write-offs.

Please can you clarify "spend", as I never used the term. If we're meandering down pedantry lane again.thebish wrote:how much did we spend on beckford and baptiste?

i thought it was a simple enough question (for a non-pedant such as yourself)Lord Kangana wrote:Please can you clarify "spend", as I never used the term. If we're meandering down pedantry lane again.thebish wrote:how much did we spend on beckford and baptiste?
ok - how much money have we wasted on beckford and baptiste?
i just think if anyone is saying we have wasted money - some numbers help.

More money than anyone else in the division was prepared to.

But we're not investing. We are spending less on the squad year on year. That isn't representing "investment".Worthy4England wrote:You often don't have to invest big sums, to be nearer the top of the league in the Championship - sure there are always outliers like Newcastle etc. that make the odd appearance.BWFC_Insane wrote:You're going to have to run that by me. I don't argue that it is possible to go up on our budget. I think the Burnley example will be cited ad nauseum and there are other examples. There are plenty of examples where sides haven't gone up. I'm not saying that it is impossible just that we're in the same group as a number of sides and not all can go up.

Sure it's harder for Freedman now, than it was 12 months ago.
Investment, to me, is money goes out of the club to get new players. That could either be in transfer fees or frees, with a decent wage package.
Of course we're spending less on both, but still more than many.

Chill out folks - after all, there's only 10 months left on Dougie Freedman's contract, after which he'll be off to spend the rest of his life sat on a park bench next to Gary Megson.
And we can all head to Blundell Park cheering on the dawn of a new era with John Beck's Super White Army.
It'll be glorious.

Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
to my untrained ears - this merely sounds evasive... I'm sure it's not meant to be. of course - others might conclude that you just don't know... which is fine - cos I don't either - it's just, for a moment, i thought you might know what you were talking about... ahh - sadness...Lord Kangana wrote:More money than anyone else in the division was prepared to.

Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
I think that BWFCi was countering the phrase "invested heavily" - which DOES suggest larger amounts than we'd normally invest. If BWFCi is right and investment in playing staff is falling year-on-year, then the phrase "invested heavily" is a little jarring...Worthy4England wrote:You sound like you're in denial about the possibility though.BWFC_Insane wrote: But we're not investing. No need for sadness. There are others who are aware that no-one else in the division was prepared to meet Baptiste's wage demands. If you were really interested, I'm sure you wouldn't need me as source material.
