one swallow and spring notwithstanding - it might be that Robson comes in for more scrutiny now... Ballance has been a bright spark...

Good start nevertheless, albeit slow scoring. New ball due about now so keep it steady lads. A good answer back from Cook, shame he couldn't get his century but a great innings.

looking on the bright side of english cricket - Ballance and Root - yes, even though they are Yorkies...

it'd be nice to have an upcoming bowler to make Broad and Anderson less complacent about automatic selection

it'd be double nice to find a competent spinner to do the donkey work - i'm still nonplussed as to why Monty has been totally frozen out...

"Ballance becomes the fifth England player to score three centuries in his first six Tests - the others are Jack Russell, Les Ames, Len Hutton and Ravi Bopara. That's not Jack Russell the wicketkeeper, it's Jack Russell who played in the 1920s."

also, today, Cook overtook Pieterson and Gower to become the 3rd highest run-scoring englishman of all time - now only behind gooch and stewart, i think...

247-2 at close isn't too shabby at all. Let's hope we can keep it up..

recent experience suggests it's not unlikely that we will collapse to 301 for eight and then rally to 389 all out!

Cook doesn't like Monty is what I heard em waffling on about on TMS a while ago.

I'm nonplussed by it too. Surely he would be a better bet than nothing?

A solid start indeed. That run rate will have to be lifted though. 247 off 540 balls isn't quite up to scratch. Wickets in hand is good but if India handle our bowlers as well as our lot has theirs then it's going to be a five day doze.

Aye. Hardly T20 pace, but good to see Cook unloading some pressure. Shame he didn't quite get to a ton, but he's probably mightily relieved. Best start we've made in ages, which should give them a lift.

My money is still on around 350-375 all out.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Great knock by Ballance, but apparently it missed the bat by four inches.

Hit his back thigh pad. He should probably have been given out on 15 though so he will probably take it.....

Haven't seen any of it (well, precious little) so am going off of Michael Vaughn's remarks. What happened on 15?

Didn't see that yesterday but according to TMS he nicked it fine for a catch behind but was given not out. Faint mark on the bat from hotspot and a noise on snicko.

Today though he was definitely not out, but I guess on balance (oh yes!) his luck was in....

Good to see Bell back on song. Had a bit of a rough trip for a while but he's a good reliable player who's got us out of trouble quite a few times. Unlucky for balance apparently. We've still done pretty good, keep it up...

Hope Bell can get his ton. Hopefully these innings will do both him and Cook a world of good, confidence wise.

And you got your wish. Larruped a six to do it in style. Good stuff. Moheen gone but 421-5 is a nice, handy start for us.

Excellent. Just seen some of the pics on the BBC site though and it looks like it's about to larrup it down.

Call now is to get India in to bat. Light not brilliant apparently and they'll be knackered, so they say...... Might let Bell get to 200, he deserves it for sure....

And with that he's out for a splendid 167.
