Salad goes in the bottom. Fill up the little ice-block which keeps it cold (you can get ones where instead of an ice-block you get a little tray for snacks but I'm not going to have a fridge from Sept so the ice-block is good). Little pot for a dressing (keeping it separate means stuff doesn't go soggy). Clip together knife and fork which are pretty sturdy for that sort of thing, although still a bit shit. Saves a shit ton of money and is way healthier.

I get to be a cool kid and bring salad to work!

Darren Clarke (Golfer) lost a load of weight prior to The Open (nine inches off of his waist). As well as giving up cheese (nooooo) he said that he swapped from drinking Guinness to drinking gin & slimline tonic. Is gin the best of a bad bunch when is comes to calories or summat?

I've been trying to trim down since April. 60 year old, 6'4" and 17st4lb. The motivation was that I had just been diagnosed with coughing asthma and could feel myself deteriorating quite fast. That and being a fat git!

As I mentioned elsewhere I got myself a Garmin wrist band that keeps track of steps, calorie output and sleep patterns, which I find really good for motivation and since April I have done well over half a million steps and am still walking anywhere between 4 and 10 miles a day and at a good pace too.

Diet has changed somewhat with Mrs C being very careful about what we eat. Zero snacking for eg, but no doubt I could do more on that front.

In June I also cut out the alcohol and for the second time this year had a (mostly) dry month.

And the result of all this? A loss of a paltry 3lb. Very disappointing to say the least but I do feel better and have had three good long and high walks in the Lakes recently, which I was beginning to think was now beyond me.

I'll keep at it.

from a dieting site...

Low calorie alcoholic drinks

here are some lower calories choices to help you enjoy the festive season.

Light beer; at 110 calories per standard drink, this is a better option than regular beer, but still has a substantial hit of energy.
White and red wine; 75-105 calories depending on the level of sweetness. Choose drier varieties for less calories.
Champagne; 84 calories
Spirits (80 proof); Gin, rum, vodka, whisky , tequila, brandy and cognac all come in at around 65 calories, but beware of high sugar mixers that can seriously increase this.

Other ways to drink less calories

Choose lower calorie mixers such as diet soda or tonic, light cranberry or orange juice, tea, light lemonade, lemon or lime juice.

Drink on the rocks; try infused vodkas for flavour without the calories

Dilute you drink; sparkling water or club soda can be added to spirits, or even wine to make a lower calorie spritzer.

Drink a non-alcoholic drink between alcoholic ones; when you choose a low calorie soft drink, this will not only reduce your calories but help reduce the risk of a hangover the next day.

Bruce, yes i have adopted the Gin & tonic thing, but only if its a couple - a night out on them id be dead, and skint! and id still get the munches!!

i always get g&t on the planes and trains, becasue the red wine is always too cold and the beer to warm.

Hmmmm, I just can't seem to break the 10 stone barrier - in the last four years I've been as high as 10st13lb (briefly) and as low as 10st2lb (on a downward trend), but am now stuck on 10st~7lb-ish. It's a bugger. I want 9st12lb as my target weight but as I go part time as of next week I expect to break the barrier some time this year (due to less sitting around on my arse at work).
I don't eat breakfast or dinner/lunch or supper. One meal a day man around eight o'clock at night. That way I can drink up to three pints of bitter without calorific consequences. Now that's a proper diet.

Eating a big meal at night is a bad idea. You don't burn off the calories.

You should eat breakfast, and eat more regularly through the day if you want to drop weight....

^^ You see Clappers, that's a bigger version of me. I only really get exercise these days via gardening, which can be more energetic than you appreciate, and by choosing to walk down to the paper shop (about mile) rather than drive. If I tried vigorous exercise after all these years it'd probably kill me.

My biggest issues are
i. Portion size
ii. Grazing

I have taken to simply not having stuff in as once it's their I will graze on it.

Portions ... what I call a decent amount would have others running (well, staggering) for the chunder bucket. So I'm trying to reduce quantities. Diet foods, especially low cal drinks are out of the question, largely because they taste shit and leave a film on your teeth. So less ha to be the answer ... although I believe there are new sweeteners with better taste and results.

I am of the view that the first stone just HAS to be easy. To be honest if I achieve that I'll be pleased & can see where it goes from there.

Now ... must go, I have that Cheese Festival to attend.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

the thing to remember is it aint easy, not if you want fast results. you gotta be a man and fight the urge. sometimes in the first few days of a diet i could eat a farmers arse through a hedge - but after a day or two of starvation (still eat a balanced diet obvs) the cravings subside. its like training your body not to be hungry...

grazing was my biggest problem.. i could consume thousands of calories a day just standing in the kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil!

portions... hmmm! some of the cereal packets give calory values for a "normal" portion - but if you wweigh what they call a normal portion - then it in no way matches what I would call a normal portion!! :D

I think there are things called "portion plates" - that you might find helpful if you are serious about getting to grips with your portion sizes...

I'd like to get a couple of inches off my waist, but I'm not bothered by my actual weight. I'm 6' 5" and 16 stone give or take a pound. Biggest issue I have is exercise. I don't do gyms, can't do running as my knees are fecked and walking is tricky here due to lack of pedestrian access. Made my mind up to walk around the area I live during the summer which is walkable, but my knee went after only a few laps of the lake. So at the moment the only exercise I get is housework and gardening :(

Made an executive decision recently to put one of those big Intex pools in the garden, which will enable me to exercise a bit without putting stress on my knee. Currently clearing the garden to lay the fake grass and hopefully will have the pool in by the time the hottest weather is done with for the year. If this doesn't work I might have to eat less, which I really don't want to do

Cheers, Bish - although I won't be using tea as a mixer any time soon.

If I have lime in a g&t does it count towards my five a day? :?

presumably you have to be on a high-calorie diet because you burn it all off in training - does this make it hard for you to eat together??

three different menus each day for you - the missus - and the miss???

I can pretty much eat what I like.

We generally eat the same stuff but it can be at different times. I get home Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and straight back out for training so don't eat until about 9 p.m. Not the best but it's better than trying to cram something in before and losing it on the run/ swim.

We eat together on the weekends though. In fact we make a point of it.
