Bit of a hot one today. It's not been that bad this year, but it seems to be heating up now.

Oh yes Monty, he can be believed. We've normally hit high 40s before now, so I can't complain. I might complain when we hit the mid 50s though

Just come off a conference call with our Chief Exec. Big changes and big cuts coming our way with a likelihood of being given 90 days consultation. Apparently the first salvos have been fired in the election battle with the NHS front and centre. Life in the trenches could get very interesting in the next 12 months.

Meh. One way or t'other it'll all work out. Feel for some who are going to get shafted very shortly though.

I'd have thought from the outside that the safest time in the NHS under a Tory govt would be the bit before an election, BB? Interesting if not.

It's an interesting one. The Tories will aim to privatise more and more NHS functions (That's not entirely a bad thing tbf - GP's and dentists in Tesco's could well be a step forward for example) whereas Labour have promised to repeal the internal market - a stupid idea if ever there was one and one which is consting millions to administer.

Either way, we have to save 15% of the budget and for once, it looks like the exec sector are going to take some of the hit.

Ceasing those away-days and massages and foot-dragging by HR can surely account for 10% savings ??

I have to swear an oath! Ok I don't actually have to go, but there is like a ceremony every year in Edinburgh for new qualified people with ICAS.

I just hope It goes 'I *state your name*' so I can reply 'I...state your name'. I always find that funny for some reason.

Yesterday went to enquire about laser-eye surgery.

To see if I was suitable, to find out what it entailed and to find out the price in my case.

Firstly it appears I am suitable,, but more appropriate for me would be corneal replacement surgery ... effectively a cataract operation but replacing the cornea. Sounds horrible but actually is quite straightforward. Certainly no less 'horrid' than straightforward laser treatment. The difference being that with laser I'd then need reading glasses. With CRS I'd have 20:20 in both distance and near sight.

£6,000 though, so not a give away. I shall ponder this.

Anyone done it ?

Interesting. I've been told that's my only hope to sort my eyes. It's quite a big deal I think though. My corneas are so fecked I can't have contacts or laser. It's quite hard to find suitable donors as well I believe?

These aren't donated, they clear out the old one and replace it with a plastic jobbie.

I'd get the season out of the way first, probably leaving the specs at home...One of my boozing buddies has had it done - went good.

A late friend of mine had cataracts starting to creep about the place. He had the things removed by, I believe, laser and understand that involved re-doing the cornea somehow or other. Once both eyes were sorted he threw away his glasses - 20:20 in both eyes. I have no idea as to the cost and it's a bit late to ask him.

For detail which some may not want ... so look away now.

A tiny incision is made at the top of the eye and into the lens area. The lens is a hard item but some product is injected which emulsifies it and it is then sucked out through the incision. Then a plastic film prepared to your prescription is inserted and unfolded. This then effectively clings to the wall of the space and is the replacement cornea. This all takes about 15 minutes and is done with local anaesthetic bit whilst awake so under heavy sedation. Brought round from the sedation most people are functioning well within a couple of hours. You are advised to wear a patch for maybe 24 hrs. The eyesight will be 20:20 plus immediately.

In my case, having astigmatism in both eyes, the extra prescription adds to the cost.

The two eyes are done a week apart.

The "be a brave boy" bit is little different than for the laser surgery but the benefits over laser are clear (ha !!) With my prescription. I don't want to go through all that and then have to wear readers afterwards. It also avoids the short term 'gritty' feeling some people get after laser.

It's a lifetime lasting procedure and you will never go on to develop cataracts in later life. I admit to being tempted but 6th isn't negligible and other calls exist.

Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about homebuyers who are a bit thick. The company that I work for has four UK sites. Two of those sites are manufacturing sites, one of which has been in its current location for 90 years. This site has heavy machinery running for 24 hours a day, five days per week.
In the past year developers have built a development of shoebox houses on the site of the factory that used to stand next door to it, and homebuyers have started to move in.

Now we're getting complaints about the noise.
May the bridges I burn light your way
