Huge credit to Cook. Got the tactics spot on. Not enforcing the follow on was absolutely the right thing to do.

Ali could be a real bonus if he can continue to work on his bowling.

However we have to hope Jimmy is not banned following the hearing....

mopped that up nicely - Moeen a big bonus!

let's hope Jimmy's not banned and this was the win we needed to establish confidence and the start of an upward trend...

Yep. All of that. Can't understand how Cook's gone from getting everything wrong to getting everything right, but let's hope it continues. We won every single session this week. Superb. In fact, I'd have given Cook the motm given the pressure he was under.

Something I only learned today, btw, is that Ali started his career as a batter and developed his bowling as he went along.

He definitely came into the side as a batsmen who could bowl a bit. Bit of a revelation. Not to be relied on at this stage IMO but a real bonus for now.

He still is a specialist batsman rather than bowler so we still need to find a spinner.

6-60 odd? Where have you been hiding this bloke? Sensational figures for a spin merchant. Congratulations to Cook and his merry men.

Gambhir goes for 4, caught Root bowled Broad. India 8-1. Handy start

8-4 now. Strange decision to bat first in these conditions IMO. Though Cook said he wanted a bat first too....

What's happening? I go off to help the wife unload the shopping and come back to find they've score 36. I'm e-mailing the selectors, this isn't good enough....

This is one of those times when we need to turn the screw and not let them off the hook. A realy great start could fritter away if we don't keep on top of them.

interval entertainment - ask the umpire..

BBC Radio Test Match Special
Ask the Umpire

If the ball splits in two, one half is caught by mid-on, the other half is dropped by mid-off, is the batsman out?

Former Test umpire John Holder: "As soon as the ball breaks in half, the umpire should call dead ball."

wtf kind of a question is that??? :D
