Carling Cup 1st round draw: Bury at home

Seriously - you make Bury favourites? If Bury bring 3000+ it will be more like a home game for them, and it really should have been a TV game.CrazyHorse wrote:They'll smash us.

Re: Carling Cup 1st round draw: Bury at home
If our very own version of William Wallace can't motivate the troops to repel an invasion from Bury we're really in lumber. And painting blue crosses on their faces and a show of asses before kick-off won't work either. That'll just be like a normal Saturday night round the Two Tubs.

We beat them in the play-offs that season (90/91) though. Heh heh.jaffka wrote:I was there as well. And you're right, Jaffka - that Bury home game was the midweek after we'd ended the 23-match unbeaten run at Mansfield, hammered 4-0, with Tony P sat on the sidelines in a herringbone jacket. A young Alan Stubbs played at Field Mill, and was as awful as the rest of 'em.
That run took us from 23rd to 2nd...

We did. I still reckon that TP's shot could've gone anywhere, mind.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:We beat them in the play-offs that season (90/91) though.

Just mad a very tough last minute decision to go tonight. Hope to see a couple of the Devvy Squad putting a case for first-team Championship action. Also, Bogdan to come in, not put a foot wrong and replace Londergroan long term.

Didn't he say vs Watford he had spent ages analysing the channel runs which Vydra and Deeney make? 20 minutes in and they've both scored from running down the channels.bobo the clown wrote:But that's not really giving away our game plan is it. Wheater?
What he IS saying ... about a division 4 club, one who lost at home in this match of 27 crosses, one who damn nearly went out of business last year ... is that he's focussing on our defence.
Really.
After last week's shambles.

There was an almost unwritten rule in those days that we must lose to Bury. They treated it as their cup final and we seemed to get caught cold every time. The play off win & the 3-1 win around Xmas time (Reeves double) came as welcome relief.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:We beat them in the play-offs that season (90/91) though. Tonight it will be normal service resumed. We'll concede 2 to crosses obviously, then grab a late consolation. The open top bus at Bury Interchange will have to have its 100 year service

We'll lump 'em with a five-niller: I see it like it was yesterday even though it's tonight and hasn't happened yet.

That 4-2 home loss hurt. But it was delightful to play them in the League Cup, Rioch's second season; they beat us 2-0 in the first leg at ours, so we beat them 2-0 at theirs - McGinlay, pleasingly, levelling on aggregate - then won on penalties. I repeat: Heh heh.Harry Genshaw wrote:There was an almost unwritten rule in those days that we must lose to Bury. They treated it as their cup final and we seemed to get caught cold every time. Not a good memory that one. The easiest hat-trick Super John ever scored I bet. Saw SKD's against us for Chesterfield as well, that was more impressive if I remember right.jaffka wrote:I was there as well.Bruce Rioja wrote:I remember being stood on the Manny Road Paddock in the pissing rain for a night match with Bury many years ago. Bury had loads of cash in those days, perhaps even saw us as equals?!!

Didn't that 'loads of cash' come from a bent chairman that ended up getting sent down for embezzlement or summat?thebish wrote:ahhh - those heady halcyon days when we might be considered equal with bury... (sigh)LeverEnd wrote: Bury had loads of cash in those days, perhaps even saw us as equals?!!

Gotta admire how much McGinlay loved scoring that goal. He'd been getting shite from the home fans all game(s).
Side note: Two goals from corners!
