I think your forgetting the nets Allardyce bought when we were promoted to the prem... they were 24carat gold thread spun on the thighs of Hawaiian virgins... they cost a fair bit...Prufrock wrote:Broadly equivalent? There's no way Allardyce has the fourth highest net spend!
Re: Freedman out!
But they were one-offs. It's that windy in Stoke they go through nets like a thing that goes through nets bloody quickly.

Re: Freedman out!
Pulis' fourth highest net spend was measured over the same period of time as all the other managers compared (ie Wenger didn't look like he'd spent more than Mancini because he'd been there ten years). I'm pretty sure Allardyce has never been in the top four for net spend over a similar period.BWFC_Insane wrote:No but he hasn't been there as long!Prufrock wrote:Broadly equivalent? I'm lost. Are you comparing allardyce at ours or w ham v pulis at stoke or palace.BWFC_Insane wrote:No but he hasn't been there as long!Prufrock wrote:Broadly equivalent? There's no way Allardyce has the fourth highest net spend!
don't think pulis stands comparison with sam in the bolton v stoke stakes or w ham v stoke - as pulis was much more financially backed.
the wham v palace one is much more harder to call. Don't have the impression Sam has had much to throw around and wham have been reasonaly comfortable. pulis obviously pulled out a miracle in a short period, without spending much at palace - could he have maintained it ?
at the end of the day both are good at what they do, but neither are going to be fashionable or get the meeja plaudits

He has spent to date ~£75M
That is a lot of money for a club of that size by any comparison.

Given that he's a great manager, and Palace is really his spiritual home, wouldn't he go back there? Particular since the know-nowts and West-Stand Boo Boys have it in for him, and he has no money. Palace - a Premier League team - must surely be an attractive proposition.
And the Palace hierarchy clearly Know Football.
Will Palace try to poach our Douglas? I hope not, but maybe we should be worried.

It's probably worth acknowledging that in several of these cases, their outgoings have been massively offset by having major saleable assets (e.g. Arsenal, Southampton, Newcastle, Everton and obviously Spurs). Like Bolton, West Ham are unlikely to be in that position. In fact, it could be argued that was the one area where Sam really let us down in his 10 years - not managing to put in place a successful youth-development policy.StaffsTrotter wrote:thought the comparison debate was allardyce v pulis

The fact is, the post-match interview is one of the places where the manager represents the club to the public and, indirectly, speaks to the fans about what they've just paid money to see. It can be done in an honest and perceptive way: a way which has a chance of keeping fans onside.
Here's my redraft of Dougie's post-Bury match spiel which would help him avoid seeming like a deluded dickhead or just plain dishonest.
"We gave a run out to several squad players who might well feature this season and it took them a while to gel. To their credit, Bury were the better team in the first half, but we had a chat at the break and I thought we picked up in the 2nd half. True, we needed a lucky break with the penalty to get back into it, but we kept going to the final whistle, so I reckon we earned that break. In extra time, we took control and our quality showed through, which I'm pleased about, although we need to defend set pieces better, so we'll be taking a very careful look at what went wrong with their second goal."
See? It's not that difficult.
As the saying goes - 'if he had another half a brain he'd be a halfwit'.

Uh-oh! Sorry to get your hopes up and then dash them so soon, guys. But, apparently, Gartside has just entered secret talks with some guy called Jose Pulis.

Calm yourself. Such trifles will be of little concern to us, once José Pulis takes the helm at the Macron...

Re: Freedman out!
I heard a story about Dougie yesterday that was far too scandalous to repeat on here - you know the type - "my aunt's masseuse has a friend who walks his dog" etc. I'm skeptical on what I was told but part of the story was that he has a place at No 1 Deansgate. Anyone know if that's true? It may give the tale some foundation

True that the club owns a few places in No. 1. Moritz was/is living there.
