Re: The athletics/running thread
OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here. Those of you that know me will no doubt attest that I've been piling on the pounds recently, so, I need to get back to where I was a couple of years back. Gym starts tonight and tomorrow a gentle pre-match restart of the fartlek / couch to 5K running programme. The idea is to get back to doing the Parkrun again by the end of October. I'm putting this on here so as to shame myself back into it and to have you all heap opprobrium upon me should I try to get out of it.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Good luck. I may even join you (if this weekend doesn't kill me).
Last weekend was Friday 1 mile swim with sets of 25m, 50m, and 100m sprints as the main set.
Saturday was 40 minutes continuous hills at 70% followed by 6 x 50m uphill sprints flat out
Sunday was a doozer. Set out to do 50 miles on the bike. My friend (who had sorted the route) didn't show so I decided to join the fast group for one (or two, with weather permitting) loops of a known route. They dropped me within 2 miles so I took myself off to Hertford where I got talking over a coffee with a fellow lone cyclist who invited me to join him on his route (turns out he lives about 4 miles from me). So we set off and I ended up doing about 63 miles in total. That'll teach me to not talk to strangers.

This week is total taper as I need to rest for Saturday.

That's the equivalent of cycling from Bolton to just north of Stafford!Gary the Enfield wrote:So we set off and I ended up doing about 63 miles in total.

Would be great to a Parkrun with you, mate, albeit from some distance behind. I think that BP might be up for it too. Then there's Genshaw and LE. Could be a TW outing.

And breakfast afterwards? Maybe a scoop before a game too? Any weekend but the 18th/19th is good for me.
Re: The athletics/running thread
in association with the exercise - I'd recommend watching what you eat too! I'm using MtFitnessPal - basically an online calrie-counting diary where you log everything you eat/drink and it tells you how many calories you are allowed in order to lose your set target per week... I'd recommend setting out to lose somewhere between 1 and 2 lbs a week. It will recommend what looks like a very dauntingingly low number of calories - BUT - if you are exercising, you log that too and it then gives you an equivalent extra number of calories to stay on track and not end up starving yourself,Bruce Rioja wrote:OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here. it helps keep you honest and stop yourself saying stuff like - "well, I've just done a bit of a jog and so I have earned this huge piece of chocolate cake and 3 pints of bitter - I've already run off those calories..." (chances are - you haven't!)
warning, though - you will soon view stuff like cheese in a very different way!

on the positive side - if you work up to the amount of exercise Enfield does - then you can eat as much as you like!

Saturday 25th October - Brentford at home. If you're up for that then it'll give me something to aim for. I'm afraid that I'm one of these all or nothing kind of people, so watching what I eat comes hand in hand when I'm exercising. I end up viewing things like having a biscuit as being 20 minutes on the bike, that sort of thing. Could be could to build up a calorie bank, as it were, though, for wine and cheese on a weekend.

this illustrates my point! a gentle jog/walk around a ParkRun earns you huge cooked greasy breakfast and a scoop afterwards! Provisionally booked. We'll talk nearer the time. Good luck with the running. If you need any tips talk to LE and Harry. They're bloody fast!

But if Bruce has been running consistently UP TO this race then it does. So ner.
In truth, though, I did a half marathon run last Thursday and only burned 1,700 calories so you do have to watch what you eat.
Bruce, you need to do a couple of runs round Leverhulme Park nearer the time too. Introduce yourself to Cruella de Hill.

Count me in! Need to start the Parkrun soon. Feel like I just need to build up a bit more stamina. Done five runs of 4.2 - 5.5 miles, depending on how the GPS on my phone fancies calculating the distance.Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Saturday 25th October - Brentford at home. Does anyone else use GPS on their phone to measure distance, and if so, how accurate do you find it to be?

Our Kid gave me some sage advice on that one about concentrating on the few metres in front and not looking up.

If it's all still working I have a thing in the laces of my pumps which matches up with a Nike app on my phone. I'm sure that the bastard thing makes me run further than I'd set out to do.Burnden Paddock wrote:

Great stuff Bruce - The Brentford match is a good target too. You've just inspired me to get my running shoes back on for the 1st time in a fortnight too, so cheersBruce Rioja wrote:OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here. Good luck Bish, Bruce and BP with it all. I might join you on the healthy eating front. My diet is still pretty shocking.
My running has rather taken a nose dive for various reasons at the moment but a month or so back I triple jumped for the first time in competition for at LEAST 18 months and didn't do nearly as badly as I though. 4th out of 11 rather then last! So feeling a bit more inspired to concentrate on that again in the future, especially when I become a veteran (in a year or so's time
