This was on a locked thread and I wanted to reply so I copied it here.
Was brilliant watching the likes of Youri at the bok. Gave you a reason to go, unlike now "Craig Davis is in the form of his life", oooh hold me back.
Absolutely agree, always annoyed me that people say that market doesn't exist anymore. There's always going to be older world class players who can't quite cut it at the highest level but still want to carry on. Obviously we can't afford them now but those sort of players were perfect for our club and we were crying out for a few -particularly a campo type- under Coyle.Burnden Paddock wrote: Pretty much none of these are realistic options for us these days, but still blows away all that garbage I keep seeing on here and elsewhere that "those transfer coups that Allardyce pulled off don't exist anymore".

Makes you weep to think the 9 figure debt we've pissed away on mediocre chancers, when a little bit of effort in scouting makes a universe of difference.
Which is why I suggested "pretty much none of these are realistic options". Sorry, going off topic maybe, just saw the list and riled me up over past transfer shockers. Especially when I hear that the Campo/Hierro/Okocha type signings don't exist anymore. Not an option for us now, but could have made a big difference in the post-Allardyce years.midlands exile wrote: One word. Wages!
Actually, two words.
The second is Championship!
There are always diamonds to be dug out of the dirt if you look hard enough. The past few managers haven't looked further than the crap on the bottom of their shoes. Combine that with the club's nonsense policy of being a "trading club" signing young English players to sell on for a profit. With the distorted market and our drawing power / scouting network, was never gonna work. Glory days trading were Rioch/Todd era, esp the Scandinavian market, seems ridiculous we ignore those markets these days...
Anyway, rant over, bed now, COYW.

Re: Freebies
Brilliant ....
"Djorkaeff turned many heads when signing with English club Bolton Wanderers in 2002, but added a lot of class to the team during his three seasons there, resulting in the creation of an international "dream-team" alongside the tricky Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha, former Real Madrid midfielder Iván Campo and the English Pele, Nicky Hunt. He then transferred to Blackburn Rovers known as the worst team in history for the 2004–05 season, but left the club after playing in only three games."

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

Re: Freebies
Nicky Hunt is a football genius.
Where is potter, who had that as a sig?

Re: Freebies
of course they still exist - but I think what is often meant is that there is a lot more competition for their signatures nowadays - there is the MLS for instance - and sunny Dubai....
