Nice one Bruce.
Did my relay yesterday at Dorney Lake. Fantastic venue.
I did the swim and bike legs and our first runner did my 5k. Was really pleased with my bike time (15k in 28:30)
And, whisper it quietly, but for the last three days I've been able to walk downstairs without pain. #longroadtorecovery

Just had a look at Dorney Lake - looks fantastic. Was it built/dug/whatever for the Olympics?

Re: The athletics/running thread
been away from here due to being busy in NYC (mainly working, annoyingly, turns out coming over to 'give a helping hand' is code for 'we can't do things, at all'). Anyway, did my sprint tri last weekend in 1 hour 38. Crap time but then again crap prep, including pedalling 8 miles to the venue after getting lost from Slough train station, making it just in time for the start line and leaving all my extra crap, d lock and all, on the feckin bike. Still, was fun. Apart from the swimming, that was CRAP.
Ah well, would like a do again. Next time.

Still not said what your split times were.

One man's poor time is another man's goal.
Anyway, last open water swim last night (for the season) at Lea Valley and I did another 2k in 45minutes. Consistent pace. Not the quickest but that would get me sub 1hr 30mins for the Ironman swim (3.8km), so I need to maintain that through to next season.

I still have another week or two before I can go back to the Orthopaedic Consultant. No pain now but it's still a little stiff. Don't dare run or even attempt a run in case I tear it again.
fecking bored I am.........

Re: The athletics/running thread
I sprained my ankle at the weekend playing football. Did RICE etc but it still swelled to twice its size and went all yellow and purple and grim. Foolishly though it might be fine within a week as the pain went. Then, walking home last night, I rolled it again. Jesus wept. Yelped like a dog. That hurts! Thankfully think it's still just a bad sprain. No cracks and I can walk albeit uncomfortably. Every time one thing fixes another seems to f*ck up!

Ah .... my injury of choice when I played. Sorry to say but you now have a returnable injury.Prufrock wrote:I sprained my ankle at the weekend playing football. Wait till you get the other ankle going the same route.
"Worse than a break" were the consoling words of a doctor after one especially back episode. It was a constant with me between about the ages of 25 -35. Watch out for uneven pavements and in fact anything which may turn the ankle. Good luck.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Problem is it's too dark to venture out on the roads and the turbo bores me stiff. Can't keep swimming or my bloody arms will drop off. Aaaaaaarghhhhh!!!!!!!

Re: The athletics/running thread
I've done the ligaments in both ankles, and what the clown says is cock on I'm afraid. Both times caused in identical circumstances - running backwards on shit pitches to defend throw-ins with no-one anywhere near me. I ended up on crutches both times though, so you've either got off lightly or you're well hardPrufrock wrote:bobo the clown wrote:Ah .... my injury of choice when I played. I've done the ligaments in both ankles. The first time came with a broken leg. The second time I was so worried about re-injuring that leg I somehow managed to roll my other ankle.

Swim was about 17/18 minutes. Took an executive decision to split between 20 seconds front crawl and 20 seconds breast stroke, as i just couldn't do it all the way. Felt so uncomfortable. One of the girls on our corporate team did the swim in 12 minutes and led the race at that point!
Bike was 47 minutes. Again, shit, due to the bike being weighed down by unnecessary stuff on it plus me just not doing enough. Should be pushing 40 on that really.
Run was about 27 minutes but was fecked by then so not fussed. Reckon with training and decent prep I could sail under 1hr 30min, but then again no point in me saying that and then not doing it. That's what did me for the TdF bike ride last month. Arrogant lazy keyser!

Yipes.
Cheers for the consoling words, Bobes!
Brucie, I'm pretty sure/hopeful it's the former. 'Well hard' isn't a phrase I've often heard used to describe me. And given our pitches are Watford's training ground, I can't blame that either. Came down on my left ankle badly after a shot. My entire left leg is now knackered, apart from the knee (*tempts fate awfully*).
This isn't mine but googling sprained ankle gave this pic which is what mine looks like though the bruising goes higher on my ankle (and only after yesterday's repeat did I get bruises across my toes):

My silver lining I'm clinging to is that all the websites I looked said I shouldn't be able to put weight on it, but about 15 mins after each one aside, I have been able to. Is a week Saturday too optimistic to be back? Various websites said 4-6 weeks ffs! I'm pretty fine walking on it, though I thought that yesterday too.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I wouldn't risk it, but at least strap it up if you do.
Re: The athletics/running thread
I've turned my ankle pretty badly running on the fells, took 6 weeks to heal fully but I could run on the flat on it after a week with a bit of pain. I wouldn't have risked any twisting and turning though.
There are exercises you can do to strengthen around it and train the nervous system to react better and help prevent reoccurrence. Also a mate of mine had an op to tighten up the ligaments after he'd done it a number of times. Seemed to do the trick.
