OVERHEARD

Post by William the White » Sun Sep 28, 2014 12:52 am

There are loads of things I've overheard that have made me laugh...

And yesterday I was on Platform 14 at Manchester Piccadilly at shortly after two.

And the next train was for 'Manchester United FC' (it's what the notice board said). And three minutes later the train was for Blackpool with a stop at Horwich Parkway). And there was a very big crowd of people waiting for the first train. And a smaller one for the second.

The first train arrived. a large proportion of the platform clothed in red decamped onto it. As it pulled out the guy next to me, in his forties, said to his mate, in a conversational and thoughtful tone... And I'm sorry if this seems in bad taste, but it made me laugh and kind of exult a bit...

You know, if I was a terrorist, I'd have caught that train...

There's a serious point there. It's now, thankfully, almost impossible for a suicide bomber to bringdown a plane. But look at the mayhem they could cause by bombing a peak-hour commuter train as it goes through a tunnel, and not once, but time and time again as in 7/7.

I think we're all aware of this Aanvalluh. You might as well say, think of the havoc they could cause by putting anthrax in the water supply or taking over a nuclear power plant.

There are indeed, death-dealing fanatics out there but they're not hiding under the bed or plotting at every street corner.

We should (as a nation) be alert and aware, but we mustn't let fear stop us living our lives and having a laugh. To which end, and in the spirit of the thread...

Overheard at yesterday's match after Derby fans shouted for handball when Lonergan picked up the ball close to the edge of his area:

Bolton Fan: Learn the fecking rules! His feet were inside the line!

Not sure how learning the rules of Rugby Union would help.

An IRA faction just before the ceasfire, Good Friday Agreement (SPIT), found that by making a phone call and saying a device had been planted in some location got the whole of the underground/rail systems closed down. So much disruption for such little effort. There wasn't a bomb but the authorities couldn't risk ignoring it. And if you have a very handy person willing to have themselves sent to paradise then the options are even more wide ranging. And they are, Youri. Only have to see the clown from South London, the amount of Jihadists from countries around the world, the lengths these evil people are prepared to go against women and children. It only take a single match to start an inferno. 8)

Not sure what point you're making that I haven't already acknowledged, Gravedigger. Yes, there are terrible people out there, but this is not WW2 (and there's not yet any reason to believe it will become WW3). It isn't even the Cold War, where there were times when the whole world could have gone up in flames.

Do we live in dangerous times? Yes. Are they more or less dangerous than most of the 20th century? Probably less, but definitely not more. Do we need to tread carefully and remain vigilant? yes. Should we all stay home, quivering under the bed sheets? No.

As you say, Youri. However my experience is the growth of these organisations will continue until they see that perhaps tomorrow they will meet their demise. Nothing boils my P more than the 'Leaders' promising the earth while the gullible do the front line action. You don't EVER see the leaders volunteering for that one way ticket. And it will be the 'Soft' targets initially, sports crowds, trains, railway stations, crowded markets. Any mans' freedom fighter can be any other mans' terrorist. As they are 'Tribal', so are we, perhaps more so. 8)

Booooo. Boooo. Willy out.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

I don't know. This all began as a harmless jest about terrorism and now things are turning nasty... Next thing you know there'll be tossers running on the forum waving the corner flag around and the like.

Standards, lads, standards.
