No doubt each instance varies but I'd be amazed if you're ready in under a month.

Over the years I did both ankles, both from the inner and outer of each. I can recall that these were after people tackling me and clogging my ankle. If the foot stays planted the ligaments bend and that swelling and bruising follows.

If you've been able to limp along maybe it's not as bad as it might have been. I'd typically be unable to place my foot down for a day, maybe two. Then a good few days of limping dramatically. What was the bugger was how easily they went in the future. Honestly, I have turned them walking up the street.

I'd listen to Leverend about the exercises. An operation is an expensive and last-ditch solution for your average person (not that I'm implying you're average Pru).
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Anyway, did my sprint tri last weekend in 1 hour 38. Crap time but then again crap prep, including pedalling 8 miles to the venue after getting lost from Slough train station, making it just in time for the start line and leaving all my extra crap, d lock and all, on the feckin bike. Still, was fun. Apart from the swimming, that was CRAP.

Ah well, would like a do again. Next time.

Still not said what your split times were.

One man's poor time is another man's goal.

Anyway, last open water swim last night (for the season) at Lea Valley and I did another 2k in 45minutes. Consistent pace. Not the quickest but that would get me sub 1hr 30mins for the Ironman swim (3.8km), so I need to maintain that through to next season.
Ah! thought i had!

Swim was about 17/18 minutes. Took an executive decision to split between 20 seconds front crawl and 20 seconds breast stroke, as i just couldn't do it all the way. Felt so uncomfortable. One of the girls on our corporate team did the swim in 12 minutes and led the race at that point!

Bike was 47 minutes. Again, shit, due to the bike being weighed down by unnecessary stuff on it plus me just not doing enough. Should be pushing 40 on that really.

Run was about 27 minutes but was fecked by then so not fussed. Reckon with training and decent prep I could sail under 1hr 30min, but then again no point in me saying that and then not doing it. That's what did me for the TdF bike ride last month. Arrogant lazy keyser!

Considering your lack of Open Water experience that isn't too shabby at all. Persevere with the swimming front crawl. The most improvement you can do you've identified is on the bike.

The run can be worked on too. 27 minutes for a 5k? Easily 2 to 3 minutes to save there.

Good luck on the next one.

Aye, that's pretty much the badger, Pru, but I had more bruising, especially across the insteps (I bruise relatively easily though).

Anyway, for the second time in three days I've just done 30 minutes on a treadmill. Feels like cheating. I imagine that it's helped with fitness but not with either stamina or leg strengthening.

Ah right. I call that a Cross Trainer. Didn't know they had a posh name. :)

Apparently that's the best piece of kit for burning fat (and they don't bollocks up your knees). I did 30 mins on Tuesday, so if I'm counting that then you're deffo counting yours in too :)

aye - i always used to call it a cross-trainer - but MFP does't recognise "cross-trainer" - and it seems "elliptical" is another (american??) name for the same thing... so I have taken to calling it that!

One of the benefits of living in London is the sheer size of Freecycle - you can pick up just about anything on Freecycle in London - especially bulky items that people wouldn't want to sell/put in the post... I got my cross-trainer for free off Freecycle - in good condition - it's ace!

running outside for the same amount of time is twice as hard (I know this!) - BUT - as you say - the cross-trainer doesn't shag up my knee like running in Essex did! I can be on it for 40mins and not even the slightest knee-twinge. also - i can watch the "Escape to the Country" or "Come Dine with Me" or "Antiques Roadtrip" whilst using it - otherwise it is fecking BORING!!! :-) it also has a little onboard computer which tells me how many calories i have burned - which always turns out to be less generous (but I suspect more accurate) than MFPs equivalent calculation...

alongside the aerobic exercise I am building in - hiking (weekly), elliptical trainer (most days), sea-kayaking (when I can get out)... I am doing the 30-day plank challenge to help work on what people seem to call the "core"...

I have done 10 days so far and it has been reasonably straightforward - increments leading up to one minute - I have managed one minute for the last 3 days...

however - I notice that today jumps all the way to 90secs!! is this even humanly possible?

looking at it, the plank doesn't seem like anything at all - yet... at 30 days I am supposd to be able to do it for 5 minutes!!

Difficult to do. The benefits are marginal. Are you combining it with the squats and abs challenge too?

Stepped up from 20 to 25 mins running on the mean streets tonight and have managed to quicken my pace by 7 secs per KM, which would still be a pretty poor 33 mins over 5K, but getting there.

I've hit a brick wall, or rather become lazy. Not run for a week and a half and have been eating everything in sight. This parkrun feels a million miles away at the moment. :?

Come on, BP. Get back on it, mate. You'll still be ahead of me. Four weeks to go yet. Don't give up. :oyea:

Last night in the pool I did 1600 metres. Started with another swim school this mornind and did 2100m. Last Tuesday I did 2k in the open water. So this wek I have swum 5.7 km and not run a single step. 40 mile bike ride tomorrow.

This afternoon should be a treat. It's been booked for ages but a friend of mine won tickets for a family of four to hav a guided tour of the Aquatic Centre followed by a 1 and a half hour session in the pool.

1300m later and that's a nice round 7k for.the week. Managed to miss the commentary for the game which was a bonus.

Dennis Kimetto just broke the world marathon record in Berlin with a time of 2:02:57.
Absolutely stupendous, that works out at 26 consecutive 4:41 miles, or 42 x 2:54 kilometres.

Cheers Bruce. Just got back on the bike, so to speak. Ran/walked 4.8k in 28.19 which was slightly slower than the last time out, but i'm happy with the time, after all of the food and booze that i've consumed recently.

Off to the docs later in the week, to get him to take a look at my calf and get a new inhaler. Can't believe I've been struggling along for the last few weeks and never once thought of using it. D'uh!

Glad to hear it, mate. If it's any consolation I got 2K into my run tonight and thought, you know what? I'm really not into doing this tonight at all, and packed in. Now I'm annoyed with myself so have to get up at 6 o'clock to go and do it again, properly.

Now here's a revelation. Running first thing in the morning is easier than it is in the evening. Or is that just me? I can go to work feeling all better about myself now. :) #pious

Now then, talking to Our Kid on the way in and he said that he finds running first thing to be more difficult, which he attributes to a lack of blood sugar. However, he also pointed out that it's better for burning off fat for the same reason. I never know what to believe as there appears to be corroborative support for every single contrasting opinion that there's ever been on any part of it. :?

I find it really tough. How are you doing it: get up and go straight out, or get up, breakfast, wait a bit, then go?
