Thanks both, but that last bits thrown me Bruce. Fresh chilli? That's not on the list!! Are you referring to the jalapeños? I do have fresh chillis in the house but couldn't find fresh jalapeños in Tesco and had to buy a jar.Bruce Rioja wrote:Indeed. And to be honest, Harry, the only ingredient that you can actually over-do is the fresh chilli.thebish wrote:it's not a question that can be answered generally! In the UK we tend to do recipes by weight - in the US they have this universal "cup" and do it by volume. Best thing is, I think, to buy a set of cup measures - full/half/third/quarter.. it makes life a lot easier...Harry Genshaw wrote:In this recipe (& generally) - how much is a 'cup' ?Bruce Rioja wrote:, but I'll put the recipe on here for all (I thought I'd posted it up before)

a cup of onion is about one big onion! (near as makes no odds!)
I swear, I'm asking you to come round and cook it for me next time

I know what they are! As someone who's done the dish though would you recommend fresh chilli peppers or jalapeños from a jar?thebish wrote:aye - jalapenos are them little red or green buggers you get in most supermarkets or vegetable-mongers!

Fresh. Fresh every time. You'll get 3-5 in a bag in Sainsbury for under a quid. I'm not sure about Tesco

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Fish, chips and peas from Chae's chippy (Tonge Moor Road) last night. First time I've been there in years. I'd forgotten just how good they are. A return visit will be made shortly.
Fish and chips again today, with WtW, Bruce and ST. The diet has been put on the back burner.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
This morning, James Martin made Toad in the Hole using his granny's old recipe. He fried the sausages in beef dripping (lard?) instead of oil, and just the sight of them sizzling in the frying pan had me drooling.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
because 90% of your parishioners will have and it means you're out of touch. Shocking .... simply shocking.thebish wrote:may I ask why I should have heard of James Martin??bobo the clown wrote:Yupthebish wrote:not a name I had ever heard until today! is he really that famous? Get out of it. He has been on the TV for years and even appeared on Strictly Come Dancing. I'm sure you will recognise him.thebish wrote:not a name I had ever heard until today! is he really that famous? Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.
Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
why is he so famous?? 90% of my parishioners??
is he a BBC chef? - the recipe links to the BBC.
I don't watch cookery programmes. pretty much the only things I watch on the BBC are Holby City, Casualty - and Doctor Who with the kids.. and the occasional drama series if there's a good one on - I don't think he's ever been in them. where else would i encounter him?
if being out of touch with daytime tv is a bad thing - then you're welcome to your being so in touch! congratulations!!
you and me live in different worlds!! daytime TV cookery programmes??? really??
(I have never watched Strictly Come Dancing either - ffs!! what do you take me for!)

Well, he's certainly more famous than Jennifer Lawrence...

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I have heard of some TV chefs..
namely - Delia Smith, Jamie Oliver, Ken Hom (was he on TV?), that shouty sweary one, and Fanny Craddock - but that's about it.. oh - there was also one who drank lots of wine and did programmes about cooking fish - and Hugh Fearnley Shittingstall... I largely know them from notoriety, though, rather than watching daytime cookery shows...
but - James Martin - sorry... wouldn't know him from Adam...

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
back to tango's original post...
Toad in the Hole (or - frog in the bog as we used to hilariously refer to it in our house)
I haven't had that in YEARS!!! I am quite tempted to have a go... that recipe, though - EIGHT eggs??? Granny obviously had chickens and times were not as frugal as grandparents make out!!
Toad in the Hole - I lump that in with other old traditional dishes that my mum usd to make - but you rarely see today - like Stew and dumplings...
i fancy some dumplings now...
