My great grandfather was killed in WWI just a few days before cessation of hostilities. He had been awarded the Belgium Cross and the Military Medal, and we had always assumed that these had been awarded posthumously. A few years ago I tried to find out more. He was also mentioned in dispatches, which is an honour in itself. Amazingly, I found out that the Military Medal and the Belgium Cross we're not available at that time. I've never been able to find out for what action(s) he was awarded.
Thanks for sharing Will.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
I'm a bit confused, Bench. I know nothing about the Belgium Medal or why it would be given to an English soldier. However, the Military Medal was certainly around in WW1 and recipients should probably be listed in the London Gazette and regimental honour rolls. These and other sources should give the date of the award and the reason.Bench wrote:Sobering stuff. Lest we forget.William the White wrote:The post I never thought i would make...

All recipients of UK medals are listed in the (London) Gazette which is available on the internet. This site tells you about how to start your search.
Wiki also lists all recipients of the Military Medal 1918-1920. Other years are available - see links at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Necrothesp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

We've looked before and read the Regimental history (the Lincolnshire Regiment) at the Imperial War Museum. I'll check the sources that you have mentioned but we were told years ago that the records were destroyed by enemy action in WWII. The Regimental history also lists the Croix de Guerre as being awarded.
Will give your sources a whirl and let you know if I have any joy. Thanks.

While regimental records might have been lost, The London Gazette won't have been destroyed. It's been digitized now. Good luck!Bench wrote:Cheers Monty.Montreal Wanderer wrote:All recipients of UK medals are listed in the (London) Gazette which is available on the internet. Thanks, chaps. I'm not too sure that congratulations are in order, after all it's merely good luck rather than anything else that we've both made it so far without illness or accident intervening.

Struth, you lot must be leading miserable lives at the moment. No posts since mine 11 days ago?
Whilst it's a very simple thing it was enough to make me happy. I approached the task with some trepidation as I hadn't before transferred a whole web site from one server to another. In the end it was so simple an exercise that I surprised myself with my, erm, 'skills' in this field of endeavour. No hitches, no sweat on the brow (well, perhaps a little bit) and the site transferred as smooth as silk. So I'm right chuffed to find everything still working this morning.

It's fckg dark at 5.30pm. There's no reason to be happy.Dujon wrote:Struth, you lot must be leading miserable lives at the moment. No posts since mine 11 days ago?
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Well, I'm not like some people. I accept that it's part of life, it's not going to cease because I don't like it. It doesn't make me ill, or depressed as such but I just fckg hate it.Beefheart wrote:Just me that likes when it starts getting dark early then?
If we really HAVE to move the clocks forward we should do it a month later and then back forward a month earlier.

You'll never get promoted with that attitude. Marginally early start and it's one long grumble.bobo the clown wrote:It's fckg dark at 5.30pm. There's no reason to be happy.Dujon wrote:Struth, you lot must be leading miserable lives at the moment. No posts since mine 11 days ago?

I could go to the angry thread and complain about how soul crushing the waiting is for a visa interview at the US embassy thread, but the visa application has been verbally approved, so I will post in here instead

All in all I was there for about 7 hours as I recall. Missed my train home anyhow.KeyserSoze wrote:I could go to the angry thread and complain about how soul crushing the waiting is for a visa interview at the US embassy thread, but the visa application has been verbally approved, so I will post in here instead
