This. I can't believe folk are still falling for this 5hit. A mate of mine with an Asian wife posted something of theirs yesterday. The usual - I support our troops. 99% wont share this blah blah boll**s :whack:

London conferences. Usually pointless, not often interesting. And to cap it all, someone's booked me onto the 5.17 am train. Not. A. Happy. Bunny.

Today I'm angry about having toothache. Not just that but the tooth that's aching (factor in my jaw and right ear now as well) was earmarked for extraction as far back as May. Only, it's a lower wisdom tooth so I have to have it done in Hozzy.
Yesterday I got onto 'em to find out what's going on, only to discover that the stuff that they supposedly sent to me in August was sent to someone else by mistake.

I'm now becoming immune to Ibuprofen!!!

I'm sure you know what he's on about Worthy. "Grandad, can I get a drink? " and "Grandad, I need a drink" are just two of the versions I've had said to me to replace the old-fashioned mannerly " Grandad, please can I have a drink?"

If any of mine ever ask if they can 'get' a drink I'll be inviting them to feel free! Oh, that's not what you meant is it, little person? It'll be me doing the 'getting', won't it?

I actually have done that. Has no affect at all except to get you the patronising/bewildered look that tells you her mum waits on her hand and foot at home. :| (lazy little git)

In the case of my youth when I asked my grandmother "Can I have some more whatever, please" she responded: "You can but you may not." This is the distinction - there is a difference between being able to do something and being permitted to do it.

See, that I've always found to be an artificial distinction. My Grandpa was a stickler for it when I was younger, making that very point. My smart-arse answer was that given it was his drink, if he didn't give me permission to have it then I wasn't able to have it. Needless to say this young knob-head went thirsty!

Why is the distinction artificial? Can means one thing, may another. Granted with your grandfather's drink the question is moot, but again there is a difference between "Can I smoke?" and "May I smoke?" Even young lawyers should see this.

Can I get or May I get, you're barking up the wrong tree for me. It's the 'I get' bit that riles me. "Can I get a latte, please?" No, you fecking can't. It's the responsibility of the person that you're asking to 'get' it for you.

BTW, I was always taught to use 'may' as in 'may I leave the table?'
