Roy Hartle
The club have announced that he's sadly died at the age of 83.

Re: Roy Hartle
Quite a bit before my time but none the less a name that I am aware of due to Wanderers folklore. Hartle and Banks giving out free Burnden gravel rash.
Rest in peace Roy and may your family find peace.

I did see him play a few times. Big, no-nonsense lad that earned him his "Chopper" nickname. Another good Bolton lad passed on. R.I.P.

Yes, I saw the Chopper play and I think his career ended much later than Tommy Banks. He was still chopping them down in the mid-1960s after the great ones he played with had retired. Yes, he was a player in 'my' team - my first season ticket was 58-59...Montreal Wanderer wrote:Yes, I saw the Chopper play and I think his career ended much later than Tommy Banks. Tough as hell. Ruthless, dirty bastard. Bolton fans loved him.
He stood as conservative candidate in Halliwell at least twice.
None of our family voted for him though.
RIP, Roy...
Tommy Banks still with us - how many more of the 58 cup winners still going?

RIP. I was brought up watching him. We were fed the Tomny Smith, Chopper Harris, Nobby Styles stories about hard men. Not one could hold a candle to Roy Hartle.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Roy Hartle
Sad very sad RIP.
England legend Nat Lofthouse reckoned he was frightened of his own Bolton teammates in his playing days. Well, two of them anyway. Fullbacks Roy Hartle and Tommy Banks had such a fearsome reputation that striker Lofthouse maintained: ''When they were playing behind me, I used to put shin guards on the back of my calves.''

The two Brians (Edwards and Birch) and Doug Holden I think. United may have a better survival rate as they may have been younger.William the White wrote:Yes, he was a player in 'my' team - my first season ticket was 58-59...Montreal Wanderer wrote:Yes, I saw the Chopper play and I think his career ended much later than Tommy Banks. Re: Roy Hartle
RIP Roy - I just about remember seeing you play. There's talk of a round of applause on the 58th minute tomorrow night, which would be a nice fans tribute.

I think that should happen, although you would hope there'll also be something pre-match too.

Re: Roy Hartle
Played before my time, but I got a measure of how immense a player he must have been on the afternoon of the Tranmere away game (yes, that one) when a bunch of us met in Monteraze to board a coach. My mate's uncle, 20 years older than me, spied Roy sat having a pint and was like a teenage girl on having spied Harry Styles.
RIP Roy.
RIP Roy.

I'll add Jimmy Case and Dave Mckay to that bunch, but aye, Chopper was the man.bobo the clown wrote:RIP. I was brought up watching him. We were fed the Tomny Smith, Chopper Harris, Nobby Styles stories about hard men. Not one could hold a candle to Roy Hartle.

Re: Roy Hartle
Sad news, my dad was telling me earlier about going to West Brom with my Grandpa as a kid for an FA Cup defeat and some winger called Hogg getting dumped onto the track right in front of his front row seats. Apparently he looked like he felt it. I'm sure there will be a decent tribute tomorrow.
RIP Roy Hartle.
