I don't mind Gays, play fair I just didn't see the need for them to hijack marriage when civil partnerships were open to them.
And common law marriages are open to heterosexuals. So? If the government gives benefits to married couples and not those in some kinds of civil partnership (as has been the case in some jurisdictions) it is discriminatory.

Common law marriage isn't a thing here. But yes, pensions in particular it was important for (though even that wasn't originally going to be completely covered by the Act). Friend of mine pretty heavily involved in the successful campaign to get that ammended.

There are also issues of changing jurisdictions. For example, if a Canadian national wishes to bring his same sex partner back to Canada, it is (or perhaps was is now more correct) a lot easier if they were married. A problem if they could not get married. Same sex marriage has been the law here for some ten years, so concepts of civil partnerships, civil unions, common law marriages, etc. depending on the Province have been set aside by Federal legislation.

Not really sure why gays getting married is 'hijacking' marriage. Hijacking suggests someone is losing out somehow. Who is losing out and how, exactly? :conf:

Why oh why in your world do we have to keep giving everything away to everybody? You know some of us like a bit of difference in things, if it was about pensions well feck let them amend the law to sort that out.
Mind you on reflection perhaps we should pass laws that gays can get married in a Mosque

Although we have had same-sex marriages for a decade, there is no requirement that forces a church, synagogue or mosque to hold the ceremony. Nor is a minister required to officiate if it is against his "beliefs". However, it is failry easy to find some minister or Rabbi to perform it - not sure about imans. Of course, civil officials are required to perform marriage services if requested - their beliefs are irrelevant. Double standard? Not really IMHO.

The intellectual dishonesty there is staggering! That's it, is it? All the argument on this, all the bluster, is just because you want a bit of variety in life? You just simply think life is more "interesting" when we use a different word?

I'm sorry, I simply don't believe you. Though if it is true, surely you'd support the act because now you can have gays who are married OR in a civil partnership! Isn't that exciting?! Variety is the spice of life after all!

I came on here to find out about frozen fingers in Bishville, mini tornadoes in Dujonland, and sunny spells in Montyreal.

Cold, sharp, weak sunshine and all the cars iced over in Ice-Station Farnworth this am. Sky still blue but I don't think it'll stay that way for long.

Well lets see Islam adopt to modern society eh? Now that would please you (though I doubt the Imams, clerics and suicide jockeys).

A heterosexual couple have recently started legal proceedings on the grounds of discrimination over here because unlike gay couples they can't have a civil partnership. The government said it expected such proceedings when they allowed gay marriage.

Absolutely pissing it down and blowing a gale in Co. Kerry, and due to get worse. Structural damage expected, apparently. Still, I'll take it rather than it snow.

Never heard of it until just now... a speciality of bishville and other usually 'tropical' places by the sounds of things.
