I maybe wrong but I've never heard of it being used anywhere outside, and when I've mentioned it at work in both Bolton and Manchester, I've had blank looks.Bruce Rioja wrote:I'm not having any of that as being a Wigan thing, Wigan. BiL is a Wiganer. I'd never heard it 'til he used it.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I have known steak and kidney puddings as "babies yed" all my life. I certainly wouldn't say it was exclusive to Wigan as nearly everyone in Tonge Moor called it the same when I was growing up.
Clempt is also another word that I have always used.

Chorley New Road
Anyway whatever.
Last night celebrated my return to competitive running (sort of) with a few scoops at the Bank Top brewery pub in 'Orwich.
Lots and lots of Flat Cap and good banter with the family. No noisy house music or invasive fruit machine just loud conversations all over the room. Good times.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I've just asked around the office and the voting went as follows - The representatives of Bolton, Bury and Chorley are all familiar with the term 'Babbies yed' and use it regularly.
However, the ones heralding from Rossendale, Accrington and Oldham weren't familar with it, and Hale Barnes didn't even know what a steak pudding is, but thinks that they sound "Frightfully good".

I must confess here, I suppose, that my older brother, mother and her entire side of the family are all from Wigan. My uncle is from Coppull, where they take it in turns being the village idiot, but is v much not a Wiganner. Must be a Lancashire thing that doesn't stretch to the Southeners in Greater Manchester

I've never heard of that pudding thing either. I think it's to do with Great Lever and Hale barnes being similarly posh.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I never know whether to put chat about restaurants in here or in the 'What Are You Eating?' thread. Maybe we should have a dedicated restaurant thread?! Anyway, as has previously been mentioned somewhere in this section of the forum, Rammy has, these days, morphed into this microcosm of fantastic eateries. It even has a little brewery and is home to a Chocolate Cafe (brill, and very original for when the gift of chocolate is called for). Anyway, last night a bunch of us headed to a tiny Thai restaurant on Square Street (via cocktails in The Lounge. Aye) called Spring Garden. Absolutely superb. We were eight in number so we decided to go for a set menu, of which every single dish was superb. I really recommend this place to the forum. Book if you're going to go though. Like I say, it's tiny and very popular. We had to walk through a line of unbooked hopefuls just to get in. http://www.spicegardenramsbottom.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
