Oh dear!

Sit on the border whilst watching a potential massacre of the Kurds yet find quite a potent force backed up by air power no doubt to dig up the remains of a corpse of dubious authenticity!

Now't as queer as folk.

And on a 'Quare' note, I was taken to task this morning by a colleague, as its is now apparently not just LGBT to describe my colleagues of different persuasions, but LGBTQ. Some of my colleagues might like to 'identify' whatever that means, as "Queer". My question as to where this might end should everyone want to be 'identified' differently was met with a withering look. I further blotted my not exactly spotless copybook by then asking if the word "Queer" wasn't rather offensive in nature, in an attempt to open up a horrendous can of worms. I love it when people bite.

I just had to look up 'LGBT'. A siren will just have gone off in Connecticut now.

Decidedly gay chap I used to see a lot at work before I retired, told me that most prefer the word queer to gay when describing them. Things may well have changed since.

I've come across an extra I on the end of LGBT in the past. My curiosity got the better of me and I was told it stands for Intersex (write your own joke). Perhaps I've had a sheltered life but I've no idea what it means

Oh - believe me - LGBTQ is well out of date!! There are at least 3 more letters after that nowadays! Tell your colleague to keep up!

I never got the link between the LGB bit and the T bit, nor these other ones. It's like having a group for rugby players, football players and hockey players. And then sticking the poetry club with them. There's nothing wrong with poetry, it's just not linked.

LGB I can see, all sexualities, all non-heterosexual and all suffered similar types of prejudice and social barriers in the past.

I don't see how transgender and intersex and whatever else fits in that.

You (tried to) fck me off for not knowing .... or caring to be quite frank .... what all the new letter were, or meant.

I do now .... and now you're saying they don't count.

Humph

:conf:

The only thing I can think you're referring to was your claim that you hadn't heard of the acronym BAME (black and minority ethnic FYI). That's not a social or personal point, it's a "that's borderline professional negligence for someone who works in HR" point

BAME (& I still don't get it) was the one ..... and I developed the question to "intersex" and whatever the fck "Q" means.

We may as well line up the whole alphabet to be honest.

I'm genuinely surprised you haven't come across it! It's on everyone of those "equality monitoring" forms that go with every other form every HR department I've had contact with over the last 5 years send out. Mustn't have it in Wales. Not enough letters :D.

Maybe you work in more refined .... or public sector ... circles. It's not how private firms operate. Not even in Englishland.

Never clapped eyes on BAME ... I'm rather pleased to say.

"black and minority ethnic" why isolate 'black' ? :conf: Why do it at all, would be the real question, but given that we do BAME just seems close to tautological.

You know, somewhere down the line I got the idea that we were working at being all classed as the same/equal sort of thing. Must have imagined it.

Coz if they called it "ME" it would be confusing I guess.

I don't think many people think discrimination is generally conscious or deliberate anymore, so if companies and organisations want to ask applicants to fill in an anonymous form to make sure they're not accidentally discounting a tranche of people and so try to get the *best person for the job* then I find it hard to get worked up against them! These forms are anonymous and are used for general monitoring so they aren't used to choose who gets or doesn't get a particular job.

hmmm... y'see - in the circles I mix in, Black and Minority Ethnic has always been BME - not BAME...

BAME is Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic.
