Here's the finished article guys. Thanks once again for your insights, hope I did the Allardyce era justice.

An excellent read, but if I may venture a small criticism...

Vincent Candela was an absolutely magnificent footballer for us. He just didn't want to stay. Perhaps the exception that proves the rule? (It just irked a little that he was unfairly lumped in with the likes of Ba and Jardel).

aye - that's my memory too - but he only made 10 appearances for us in total... I sometimes wonder if that helped him - the dazzling brilliance of rarity and no time to really blot his copybook...

(though having said that - we've signed plenty who need nowhere near as many as 10 games to blot their copy books!)

Thoroughly enjoyed reading that. Well-researched, and well-written.

A quick flick through Wiki suggests that he and his wife had their first child in 2005 - after years in Italy I suspect he was never going to stay.

Despite the pragmatism of Allardyce, there is an emotional core to the game, and when I remember the good signings and good players, I always remember Candela, as well as Laville and Hierro (and Bobic, I thought he was a class above, to me so obvious why he was an international striker, yet quite a few people aren't so keen).

It makes a fantastic difference to the outlook of your club when the cameos are coming from that calibre of player, rather than a Wayne Burnett, a Greg Strong or a Dean Moxey. It adds to the fantasy a little. Great times, great memories.

Good read that. Agree with comments about Candela - a classy player and a shame we couldn't keep him. Did we sign him during one of Ricky's wobbly knee episodes?

Reading that makes me feel like a donut for not stretching my finances enough to make the trips to Munich, Madrid and Marseille. Brilliant times.

You and me both (although I did go to Marseille), but my complacency allowed me to believe that there'd always be next year.

I did Munich and Madrid

Munich was fantastic, Madrid not so much.

I did Guimaraes too in the previous campaign. Which was just spectacular.

That run under Megson, getting through the Munich and Belgrade group, getting past Madrid but then knocked out in Lisbon. How long before we face that kind of luxurious opponent? :(

I don't think so because I seem to remember a) being impressed that Candela was that good to get in in front of Gardner, and b)wondering how, given Candela was right-footed and had played a bit (though not much) at RB for previous clubs, it was Ricky rather than Nicky getting the shove.

Could be my memory playing tricks though.

Finally got round to reading the article proper, and barring the already noted remark about Candela (for which you can be forgiven) it's a truly excellent piece. Well done, Blair.

Got to agree with that - and also about Candela

IIRC we wanted him to stay for the next season, but his wife insisted on going back to Italy - was it Udinese?

Maybe the child was the reason for that.
