hmmm... I'm not really convinced that slates were introduced due to customer demand!

I think it should be assumed I want it on a plate unless I ask for it to be served on summat daft - just like I assume my pint will be served in a glass rather than squirted into my mouth from an oversized water-pistol and my bank statements will be delivered through the letterbox in envelopes rather than embedded in footballs and kicked over the back wall!

(also - menus don't always say - "served on a roofing slate" - so you wouldn't know until it arrived...)

Is there really any evidence that serving bread in a slipper (or other bizarre non-plate object) has any effect, as opposed to say the quality of the food in general, the ambience of said eaterie etc? Anything at all to suggest that if everything else was equal, serving chips in a mini shopping trolley would increase the revenue?

That places do that receive the publicity, stay open and thrive I would say is ample evidence. I have a feeling that people don't appreciate how many eating establishments can't make it pay. The failure rate is incredibly high - far, far higher than the success rate.

I'm less convinced that they're thriving because of the chips in a shopping trolley. I could be convinced that the publicity plays a part. I'm more likely to try somewhere new out based on a recco from here/friends etc., than because I've seen a picture of bread in a shoe (which would make me less likely to go). I certainly don't think chips in shopping trollies are there because of customer demand.

I don't doubt for one moment, the failure rate is far higher than the success rate. 56% of new businesses (any sector) fail within 5 years.
