Re: The athletics/running thread
Every one seems to be getting back to form.
Did my first competitive 10k last night. Some positives, some negatives.
Negatives: 50.04 is officially my third worst 10k time. Knackered from the start.
Positives: After 8km I was running at a pace of 5min 10secs avg. per click. So at 8km my time was 41.30 and I was struggling, demoralised and resigned to a poor time. Then one of my club members appeared at my shoulder, a girl who, ordinarily would be way behind me. She encouraged me to keep up with her and offered to pace me in. So I tried. I finished in 50.04 which means for the last 2k I averaged 4min. 15 secs. pace which I was chuffed to bits with.
The knee held up and gives me confidence to push harder in the next race. No more 50+ times for me.
The laces thing worked. Very secure fit and no impact on my toes.

I know, it's all perspective.

On the same course 2 years ago I did it in 47.00 dead. My PB for 10k is 43.47.
So I have some way to go yet.
The winner, by the way, was sub 35 minutes.

Scrub that. The winner did it in 31.59!

I think Bruce has said before that following a young lady around a Park Run has improved his times!Gary the Enfield wrote:Every one seems to be getting back to form.![]()

I'm planning on being there, but am currently struggling with a very stiff lower back after my run last night. It was agony when I sneezed earlier.Bruce Rioja wrote:Did a late night 5K. Calf stood up to it. PR on Saturday. Who's there?

I was supposed to go and watch my sister run but couldn't be arsed. Stayed in and watched Animal house while drinking homebrew instead. I see Horwich dominated and won the team (b'stards!).Harry Genshaw wrote:I did a 4 mile trail race in Haigh hall this evening. My first club race in several months - my vest was right at the back of the wardrobe- I didn't have the confidence to start messing with my laces as well! Came in at 28.29 which is only 29 seconds down on last years time. Happy bunny tonight

BP seems to be stalking my sister round Parkrun. Keeps finishing just behind her...thebish wrote:

Might be there, but not running. Unfortunately I'm not getting back to form yet but should be able to start with a 10 min jog at weekend and build up from there.

His sister says she'll let me catch her this week. We're not even doing parkrun!

What? BP stalking your sister or you being outed as a hypochondriac?
Well, what a difference 24 hours makes. Wednesday I dragged my sorry arse round Stevenage and hated every step.
Last night I led a group around Trent Park on a muddy, wet, hilly (no hills in that London) course on a 'recovery' run. I felt strong, ran strong and averaged 8.30 pace for the 4 miles +
Differences between the two nights were:
Temperature - a difference of 15 degrees and very wet
Terrain - Road vs. trail
Nerves - Racing vs. training
Route - Familiarity
If I can just figure out which of these caused me to run so poorly on Wednesday I'd be laughing.
Re: The athletics/running thread
to be fair you were test-driving a whole new lacing system on Wednesday - that's BOUND to have made some kind of a difference as you acclimatised to it...

I'm going to test the new lacing system tomorrow to see if it stops my toes from bunching when going downhill.

Does seem to work Bruce. It 'locks the shoe around the ankle and holds the hell against the back of the shoe. Provided you have wiggle room at the front of the shoe you should be fine.
I state this, of course, as a friend and not a Podiatrist/ Chiropodist or someone from the medical professions. Nor have I ever worked for Timpsons, Tommy Balls, T.Balls, Clarks, Scholl, Asics, Nike, New Balance, Adidas or Walsh.

Aye, I've bought some New Balances jobbies and they are, without a shadow of a doubt, the most comfortable items of footwear that I've ever worn. But then I have feet like the pigeons in the town hall square. Be reet.

I won't be running tomorrow due to my dodgy back. I will however show my face to offer moral support to everyone else and shove an all you can eat breakfast down my throat!
