Why? Many paragraphs ago Bijou Bob wrote:Dujon wrote:Why has Islam been brought into the discussion? Then again Christianity is the 'official religion' of Australia but the 'true believer' is becoming a rare species these days.
We have no official religion in Canada and we are committed to religious pluralism. It is true that some two thirds of the country seem affiliated with one or other form of Christianity but the second largest group (Pru will be pleased to hear) have no religious affiliation (25%).Come on guys, to go to a conservative, mainly Muslim country and strip off??!

I brought it in simply because it adds Context Dujon. Islam is by tradition a conservative religion, ergo when visiting, there is a need to take this into account if you are planning anything risque as generally speaking, countries that are largely Islamic have a lower tolerance level for such behaviour.Dujon wrote:Why has Islam been brought into the discussion? I'm in the when in Rome camp on this one. Not that I've always adhered to it - but understand completely why it should be so.

As a total respecter of religions - my own and anyone else's - they behaved like pillocks. They should get a good bolloxing and a fine. Jailng them won't help anything, least of all inter-nation relations, cause a massively expensive load of aggro and solve not a thing except put some prospective tourists off.
It's very easy to criticise things, safely back here in Britain, but they weren't in Britain, were they? I'll join the "When in Rome" set.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I didn't Monty and whilst it was a good few years ago I'm positive I saw nothing to suggest it was anything special other than it being the highest mountain in SE Asia. There was nothing so sacred that stopped locals flogging t-shirts and the Govt insisting all parties had to travel with a guide they paid for who turned out to be totally superfluous. I had no idea such a craze existed. Hopefully, this furore will put a stop to it.Montreal Wanderer wrote:When you climbed it, did you know it was sacred? Well, anyway, all the faux-concern and over-reaction from the confused liberals who didn't know where to point their ire as they lambast local people for local beliefs .... the sort of thing if done here would have then opening their wrists with anger .... comes to nought when the parties are given 3 days in jail, backdated and taking account their time in custody, plus an £800 fine.
So, those who started comparing this to executions in Saudi, an over-reaction or just bellicose bollox ? mmmmm

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Other than as examples of foreign legal systems, which seems a fair comparison tbf, what with them both being foreign legal systems.
Anyway, good to see sense prevail.

Doubtless we'll all know more when the actual attractive one reveals all to the super-soaraway Sunday Sun .... and pockets a fortune for her "story".

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I said they would have to take their legal medicine nor did I ridicule local indigenous beliefs. Indeed I said these should be respected. I was concerned that a very senior government minister stated their actions caused an earthquake. I further said we should speak out against repressive or barbaric legal systems (such as Saudi Arabia), but I never suggested Malaysia was one.bobo the clown wrote:Well, anyway, all the faux-concern and over-reaction from the confused liberals who didn't know where to point their ire as they lambast local people for local beliefs .... the sort of thing if done here would have then opening their wrists with anger .... comes to nought when the parties are given 3 days in jail, backdated and taking account their time in custody, plus an £800 fine.

Are the youth of today really that much worse than we were? The difference for me is that we didn't have the internet to advertise our shenanigans. The only thing I'd accuse the youth of today of is being too thick to realise sharing everything online is a bad idea. That said, going off my Facebook feed, plenty from my generation are a bit thick too!

No. I don't think they are but, as you say, there's a whole new way of telling the World about it.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Are the youth of today really that much worse than we were? Also of complaining about their treatment once meted out and an overbearing sense of "I've got rights". Less opportunity for the 'clip round the ear' and an amazing degree of support for their sense of grievance when challenged. Instead of parents saying "serves you rufht" much more likely to have them on the case supporting them.
Which may explain why they are amazed when pulled up.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Only thing I have against that A.T, is it smacks of going from generation to generation and learning absolutely nothing of behaviour. Really hurts, for instance, to see the Halliwell I loved growing up in has now become one of Bolton's worst crime areas. Whatever era you grew up in it's only natural to want better for your kids and grandkids. Problem is, it isn't getting better, is it?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Are the youth of today really that much worse than we were? We have i-phones, gay marriage and I'm pretty sure at least *some* people in authority aren't paedophiles. I wouldn't swap, ta.

I agree, although I suspect she may well want to stay in gaol in Malaysia, as she's in for one heck of a bollocking once she gets home!bobo the clown wrote:No. I don't think they are but, as you say, there's a whole new way of telling the World about it.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Are the youth of today really that much worse than we were?
