Firstly there's the medical question. I think Bob slightly over-egged it to say there's no medical evidence, but there's not much. Much like the issues of climate change and animal slaughter, the majority if not all of the "evidence" saying circumcision has health benefits comes in reports commissioned by interest groups or with their support, so I'm far from convinced!

I'd say it had. Firstly

It's indisputable for example that circumcision is justified in specific cases as treatment for specific conditions and so would be perfectly acceptable as a medical procedure to treat phimosis for example. The issue is whether it's justified as a general preventative procedure. The only quibble I have with Bob's initial post is that I think there is "almost no" evidence that it has health benefits as a general preventative measure, rather than "no"!

And secondly, because so am I!

It's pretty common I think. I was pretty open with people about why I was wincing every time I walked for three weeks and found out two of my close mates had had it done too.

Having it done to solve an existing problem is different than having it done as a routine matter where there is very shaky evidence if any to suggest it prevents anything.

Worthy mentioned more than 50% in America are circumcised. I have no idea about the comparative UK stats. However, in the 1950s when I was a school in Hale, Cheshire one quick way of selecting teams for our various games was simply to play Roundheads against Cavaliers. The teams came out surprisingly equal although I doubt our Jewish pupil population was above 5%.

I read today that FAO Schwarz, the toy shop on 5th Avenue NYC, on the corner of 5th & 59th, by the SE corner of Central Park is to shut this week.

Iconic in the true sense of the modern use of the word, it has "starred" in numerous films ... 'Big' and 'Home Alone' come immediately to mind.

A 91-YEAR-OLD was punched in the face and robbed by a young woman in Bolton town centre.

The attack happened just before 8.50am this morning as the victim was walking down Moor Lane.

She was approached by a woman in her twenties, who hit her in the face and snatched her purse before running away towards Paderborn Court.

The woman is described as white and of slim build and was wearing a grey woollen hat, grey trousers and a short, dark-coloured coat.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses to the “contemptible” crime and said the elderly woman is “extremely distressed”.

The attack happened as thousands of people flocked to the town centre for the Ironkids fun runs, which began at 8am this morning.

Detective Inspector Martin Reddington said: “This was a targeted attack on a woman in her nineties, who the offender knew wouldn’t be able to defend herself.

“Targeting an elderly lady in this way is a contemptible and cowardly thing to do and I would urge anyone who knows the identity of the person responsible to call us.

“Fortunately, the woman was not seriously injured but she is understandably extremely distressed by what happened.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed what happened and if you have any information at all, I would ask that you contact police."
