In other club news,The Sun suggest that Boro are lining up a £14m bid for Jordan Rhodes(!). Assuming it's true, where have they got that money from suddenly!?
nowt to do with me - whoever put that compilation together (assume its a swansea fan) put that label on him, and I don't think they were being facetious. Judging by clips posted from other clubs the guy is obviously a skilful, creative player who fans like.

For us its obviously a question of whether he still has the legs - I'm guessing he's seen as a replacement for the eidur type/ role.

They have also paid 5 million for Downing and 3.5 for a striker from Spain!

I'd forgotten about that. Have they had a takeover or some investment recently? After relegation they seemed to be in a similar position to one we're currently in, not quite as bad financially mind you but struggling with performances and poor league finishes.
On the "banter" group I am in on Facebook, all the Boro fans are saying it's just coming from the owner.

Lad at work who knows him reckons he's already signed for Huddersfield (he thinks). He was allegedly on 8K a week at Fleetwood

Who's clearly gambling on getting promoted or else they're in FFP hell... The amount of clubs spending too much is more than there are promotion places so some of them will be in deep shit pretty soon. We're better off spending what we can afford and watching clubs implode around us...

Just saying. You're welcome.
Point taken, but I was on my phone so it was tricky.

Yup, he can sit nicely behind the strikers and he's got a decent touch. He's not awful and we could do a lot worse for such a cheap signing. This really does seem to be the best we can get atm, and I wouldn't be too discouraged. Let's see how it goes if he signs.
True, but most substitutions tend to be made in the 60th-70th minute window so will include a significant amount of gametime. Certainly can't be ignored when looking at past stats. I mean he's probably had sub appearances with only 5 or 10 minutes to go, but I imagine they're the minority.

I'll definitely reserve judgement until he's made some league appearances like our other newbies (if he signs) but I am just reserved from the reports from previous clubs, that he's a journeyman loanee and has struggled to make the first team of most clubs he's been at since Swansea. Hopefully he has a point to prove.
The fact he's always out loan is a bit weird, but maybe he's a maverick nomad.

Anyway, according to quotes in todays rag it sounds like a deal is on the cards for him. Let's just hope we get a few goals out out of him.

Indeed. Here's the link and here's the quotes:
I thought he had a brilliant game. We brought him in to have a look at him and I think he’d be a very good acquisition if we could get him. He’s a very intelligent player with good movement and a lovely touch. He scores goals and he’s a free – so you’re always looking for players who can make you better and Stephen can maybe fill that role?

I’ve always liked him – at Swansea, at Blackpool – and always kept an eye on his career He was always a good goalscorer in Scotland and he’s also got that intelligence. Maybe he doesn’t have the pace but he’s certainly got technique to play in a good team. I think he’s thriving playing with good players. Some of his football was top drawer – he’s in good condition.

We’re hoping to get down the line with one or two deals over the next week or so. It’s a big challenge because we don’t really know where we are in terms of budget. We are looking at trying to get value for money but it’s difficult. Goalkeeper is a priority, a right back, another centre-forward, and there may be one or two going the other way so we’re still working on that. It’s slow going but we’re hoping a bit of business can get done soon. Hopefully the chairman can get his calculator out.

^^^ when Fleetwood are paying £8k a week to someone then times really are odd.

Been to see Fleetwpid a couple of times and he's not really stood out for me. Their owner has really splashed the cash over the past few years, but not really found much quality.

Granted BP, but they've had no gems they've sold on for decent money, mainly journey men, with the exception of that quick bloke at Leicester whose name escapes me.

Jamie Vardy. Tbf a number of teams that have come up from the Conference have made it to League One. The likes of Stevenage, Crawley etc but only Yeovil have gone any further and they only lasted a season in the Championship. I don't think there's that big a difference in class tbh. The money that the Fleetwood owner invests will only be of real value if they can push on from where they are now by investing further, getting another promotion and staying up. Still a fantastic achievement though.

He's built a new 4 milion quid mansion just up the road here. From what I hear, his funds are dwindling and future investment may be limited. Could be an interesting season for them. I'll get to a couple of games as its only a short tram ride away.

I suppose it's pretty hard at the level they started at to entice anyone but journeymen. Their rise was probably a case of basically paying for players from a level or two above each time until they reached the League and found themselves on a more even footing financially.

Although I see they've got Elvis Costello to play for them! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declan_McManus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
