Today David Cameron makes a casual reference to the continuing swathes of migrants trying to come through the tunnel as "a swarm" and the wrath of every simpering tit is pushed toward him in faux, and opportunist anger and accusation.

W@nkers.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Agree on the faux anger but it was pretty poor judgment.

One thing that's always puzzled me about the queues at Calais and never seems to get asked - when you're fleeing a war torn country, what is it about the UK that appeals more than the other safe European countries you've already travelled through? :conf:

^^^ a very good question Harry.

Quite apart from the fact that UN & EU law say that a refuge is the responsibility of the country they touch down in .... & I appreciate that's a burden on Greece, Italy, Malta (I see very few land in Spain as they simply returned some a while ago) but that's where they should be registered and any subsequent moves arranged from.

But ... and, honestly, no games being played with this question .... why the obsession with coming here ?

Are our benefits so much better ? Even if it's a myth.

I appreciate Germany get even more and a lot go to Sweden too, but why this obsession. What is the perceived deal with the UK ?

If they're queueing they're a queue, if they're swarming down it they're a swarm If not, what are they then? What are we supposed to call illegal gate crashers and law-breakers swarming over barriers and cutting holes in fences? Put the ones being outraged on barrier duty and see what they call them then. Folk make me sick at times.

Christ. They are just people. Desperate people who are dying every day in search of a better life. I highly doubt anyone would want their loved ones to be referred to as a swathe or a swarm in similar circumstances.

I also think given that most aren't actually trying to get here, just a proportion that it is fallacy to suggest we are some sort of idyll place either. At the end of the day there isn't the infrastructure for them in many Southern European States.

What worries me most is on here and on social media people seem more worried about queues and disruption than people losing their lives. Really has become a very very sad and selfish world.

^ I share your concerns BWFC_Insane but it's still a question that needs asking. Why, for instance, are there French speaking Moroccans, Libyans & Congolese trying to leave France to come to us? I don't believe anyone fleeing for their life in the Congo has the slightest idea what benefits are available in Western Europe but something is definitely attracting them. Cameron tried to claim our strong economy (subtext - ' down to George & I') was what was drawing folk in. Really?

I believe that proportionately we take less than many other European countries but if it's really about feeling safe, we shouldn't be getting any. They'd all be stopping in the places Bobo listed surely?

But they've stopped being in danger of "losing their lives" when thy reach Italy, or France, let alone Greece or Malta. So if safety's their motive they've achieved it.

So that's just emotive bollox and gives fck-all answer to the question of "why here ?"

They are dying trying to get on lorries. The more developed nations are going to attract more for obvious reasons. Why Germany take many more than we do. But we can't just expect this to be someone else's problem surely?

And since when did we becomes so literal that terms like herd and swarm can't be used without screams of outrage? People get called cxxxs and worse on here everyday, does that mean they look like female pubes and that they should just take it as acceptable, but words like swarm are crimes against humanity? Get a grip. The issue is the problems being caused by the inability to control entry by illegals, not who or what they are. How can you insult somebody you've never seen? Are the illegals from abroad the ones doing the outrage thing, or would that be spectators over here more concerned with political issues than people?

Fck .... just as complicated as ever you were.

They arrive in Italy, Greece & Malta. They are then in are in a safe place. A safe country. They appear to be taking huge risks to get out of there. From that moment they are economic migrants. As they move on through France to Germany for here they are still in perfectly safe nations. If they moved on they could go to Belgium, Holland, with, because of Schengen almost no restrictions on their movement.

My question is "Why ? What's wrong with France or Italy ?"

They are claiming a right to be safe. They are safe there. Why so determined to get here ? That is my question. If you don't have an answer then fine. Don't change the question.

Some are staying in France and Italy though. It isn't like most are coming here, just some. As to why, probably because some of them feel their best chance of a job and a new life is here. I believe research a few years ago showed it was common for asylum seekers to think the UK and Germany are easier to get jobs in. Usually illegal jobs.

Can you get to France and Italy going west down the channel tunnel? I don't think David Cameron was considering that happening.

as said above - the number trying specifically to get to the UK is a tiny fraction of the total number... why? impossible to give a general answer as they are all individuals.

some will have family here
some will have english as their second language
some will have contacts here
some will come because they know we need cheap labour in some industries and they can get it
some will have been sold a particular "route" by traffickers that promises them a life here and leads to calais
some will have an irrational drive stemming from something they have read or been told about the UK or seen in a film
it could be any number of reasons

but it's still a TINY percentage of the worlds economic migrants and asylum seekers who seek to come to the UK.

Thank you. All possible reasons. Nothing to do with benefits, real or imagined ?

I didn't ask about the numbers. I understand the %'ages. I understand that Germany get enormous numbers and coming under increasing internal pressure.

Cracks me up, that these people are so desperate that they have to communicate with eachother using just an iPhone! How do they manage it! I read one woman paid $15,000.00 to get her and her kids out of Syria because her husband turned out to be gay and she felt ashamed

Fifteen THOUSAND dollars

Just don't refer to her as part of a swarm though, because that's what really matters.

But you can surely see why the language is seem as a bit inflammatory?

We have less asylum seekers in the UK than the European average. It is wholly inaccurate to make out that we are the place everyone wants to come to. And calling human beings a "swarm" is going to provoke a reaction. Perhaps an assessment of the actual numbers the proportion and a calming of the rhetoric would have been more useful.

For comparison sake, imagine the many more Jewish refugees who survived Europe during the 40's being referred to as a "swarm". It wouldn't have happened, well it would but only before the end of the war......

^^ No. Truly. I absolutely do not see that as inflammatory other than to people seeking to be inflamed. Really, I don't.
