I think we'd already spunked the £4.5m on N'Goggers the summer before hadn't we?

We managed to get Tim Ream and Marvin for Gary Cahill.

Was on a stag-do on Saturday talking about the Spurs effect, how they still manage to get £15m back for each bag o' shite they splurge on, yet we're stuck getting half that for England's first choice centre back.
Now, fair enough, I have no real interest in Spurs, but I've never even heard of most of these. :?

Paulinho £9,000,000 I couldn't pick him out of a line, but I've heard of this one.

Lewis Holtby £4,600,000 Nope. Nothing.

Étienne Capoue £7,000,000 Nor this one.

Younès Kaboul £3,000,000 Yes, he has a daft haircut.

Benjamin Stambouli £6,000,000 Nowt whatsoever.

All sold for a bloody fortune. :conf:

Very true, but he only had like 7 months left on his contract didn't he?
Aye, but that's part of my point, Spurs never seem to be at the point where they're struggling with losing their best players because their contracts are running down. Within 4 months of signing anyone could have told you Cahill was the real deal. Get them signed up on long-terms as soon as you're confident. I appreciate long-terms are a risk, but it's not like anyone was suprised Cahill turned out mint. IIRC Mavies is on a long-term, and Clough signed a new contract the week after his debut so hopefully we've learnt from that period.

Wasn't Cahill about to sign an extension with us, but then Chelsea swooped so he held off? Or am I recalling incorrectly?

Either way, yeah let's hope so. Hopefully Vela's on a decent length contract too, Amos too. Really rate them.
I don't remember that. I remember him quite clearly being off in the near future from about 18 months before his contract ran out (basically as it became obvious he was f*cking mint). At that stage, whilst we'd all like to keep all our best players, he clearly wasn't turning down Sampiyons League for us so get what you can and reinvest. I appreciate on the other hand you can't always get what you want for them. The summer before he went there was talk City and Arsenal were after paying £12m while we held out for £15m. In hindsight that £12m in summer would have been a lot more useful.

Though Captain f*cking Useless would probably still have wasted it on toss, mind.

No. Citeh came in for Cahill as he entered his final year. They baulked at our asking price, as did Arsenal.

Even if we'd stayed up he was off and we were very lucky to get the £7m we did in the end

City agreed a fee with us for Cahill 12M rising to 15M, the summer before he was sold. Medical booked, terms agreed.

Then they pulled out of it at the last minute over an internal dispute about their transfer direction. Someone within their team felt they could get better value on the foreign market.

And that is fact. Direct from Owen Coyle.

Or not. Paulinho was bought for around £17m and Capoue for £9.3m. Kaboul cost around £8m. They made a relatively small profit on the other two. It's almost certain they'll also lose several million in the transfer of Soldado.

FWIW surely the point is, that the club has to take into account both the fee and the wages. A Josh for a couple of million on 2 bob, might equate to a Medo for no fee on a couple of million wages. Or am I missing something.
As has been rehearsed any number of times, the conundrum is our major wage earners are not our most saleable assets.
Yes but in a normal situation we'd not be releasing players simply to be able to afford Heskey and Dobbin...

My point was that simply, we don't know how much any bid would be a normal rational footballing decision or how much it would be dictated by finance and Eddie Davies' situation. Basically because we don't really know what Eddie Davies' situation really is, nor do we know how much or how little of a hole the club is in right now. I don't think we're at the point of selling players for tiny fees just to keep going, or at least I hope not, but we have no idea how far or close to that point we really are.
which was jaffkas point (i think)
The art of summary

It looks like Alf to Wolves is a done deal:

Like the Juke last year, proper shame.

In all but the Wolves sense I wish him well. I hope his club crash & burn of course.

Wolves will go up now. Afobe has become the real deal and they have ALF to pick up any scraps.

They seem to be a good unit.

Some front line Wolves have got.

Blackburn didn't get him. Now that was a surprise

Yep, Wolves set for promotion, but who'd have predicted that 2 seasons ago. It's a funny old game.......there's hope for us yet.

Quite a few teams looking at promotion.

The obvious favourites are the 3 who have come down Burnley, Hull and QPR along with big spending Middlesborough and Derby.

At least two of those to miss out and maybe more due to some less fancied teams being shit hot over the course of a season.

Gutted about Le Fondre, but we never were realistically going to re-sign him, but Wolves?....Oh well, sod him!!! Hmmmm..Now, by my very simple brain :) there are only 3 teams that can go up....quite a few teams are spending money, those that have come down still looking pretty good, couple of teams who have come up from league one looking promising.......you never know, we're not under pressure to do anything this season, let it stay that way

I'm not sure I'm "gutted" about not signing Le Fondre - I have a slight suspicion we have built him up into being the kind of absolute nailed-on saviour that he was never gonna live up to being... not that he was crap or owt - just that he's not Anelka or anything!

or maybe I was just resigned to this season being another bag of crap and so it would take a lot to make it feel worse?

This is the Championship, though, and this is his level. He proved he could do the business for us last season; he's the kind of striker who only needs a sniff and he'll score. He might not be Anelka, but he's a goalscorer. But alas.
