that's where I am.. He's gash at defending, but he's a number and without a direct replacement lined up, we'd be bonkers to consider low bids for ANY of our defendersBWFC_Insane wrote:BN guy saying no confirmation yet that a bid has even been made....
But timing is wrong on this. I'm no Ream fan but he covers two positions and we need him playing Saturday. Few weeks ago and I'd have driven him there for £2M...but we can't really sell now unless they offer something daft. Or unless we just need the money more than anything else.

mebbe so - but... what if Lenny thinks that by freeing up wages/bringing in some cash - even if a low offer - then he can bring in two defenders that he thinks are actually up to the job... then it might be a decent gamble to risk a couple of games in order to grab the cash while an offer is still on the table..boltonboris wrote:that's where I am.. ^ of course, highly speculative - but without knowing the full picture it's difficult to know what Lenny is up to...

As much as it pains me to say it, I don't think we could take it while neither Derik nor Wheater are fit.
Otherwise I'd be tempted to take it, half towards running costs and give Lenny half to buy someone who can actually defend.

Respectfully, if there are defenders about who can be up to the job, why would anyone want to part with a million or so for a player some here think is rubbish, and could we get two good defenders ( or the chance they might be) whose wages would be any less than Ream's? Surely the start of a new season isn't the time to be parting with at least a decent player in a spot he can play (left back) that notoriously been a weak area since Ricardo Gardner packed up? Just asking....thebish wrote:

like I said - we need defenders - IF Lenny can bring two in who he thinks can do the job - then I can see a scenario where offloading Ream (who is no Cahill) to make that happen would make sense. as i also said - I'm not saying this is what will happen - just that it is not automatically "bonkers" - given that we don't know what Lenny has in mind or how highly he rates Ream...

Cos that is football. We once sold Mark Fish for £2M and brought in Anthony Barness and Simon Charlton on free transfers.TANGODANCER wrote:Respectfully, if there are defenders about who can be up to the job, why would anyone want to part with a million or so for a player some here think is rubbish, and could we get two good defenders ( or the chance they might be) whose wages would be any less than Ream's? We did not go up when Fish was playing.
Barness and Charlton did the job. Ream has qualities, they just aren't necessarily the qualities we most need. He is good on the ball and can pick a pass. But I'd imagine Derik is the same and Dervite is supposedly in the sameish sort of mould.
But we need someone to dominate our backline. It is where we've been lacking. Look at the times Ream missed a header our got outmuscled last year and it cost us. Particularly late on in games, Reading, Norwich spring to mind. If he is who we can raise some cash with then there is an argument that we could better balance ourselves at the back in terms of types we've got there.

With Ream being our player of the season last season I've still never quite sussed out as to whether that reflects (a) an improvement in his ability, (b) a reflection as to the level at which we're now playing, or (c) a sign as to how wank the rest of our squad were?
Still, if we were to get rid I do actually think that we'd struggle to find as good or better with our available money.

A teeny bit of a, a bit of b and a lot of c. Sell him and stick Kellet or whoever in until we can sign someone. Anyway, we can always use Moxey

^^
All in an ideal world, of course. My point was if any of it was going to happen at all it should not have been three days before the first match of the new season. I can't imagine Ronnie O'Sullivan testing out a new cue three days before the U'K Championship or Phil Taylor trying out new darts three days before the P.D.C. In just the same way we aren't going to get far if we start throwing untried defenders in two minutes before the whistle goes.
Ah well, COME ON YOU WHITES...

In an ideal world football wouldn't pay Baptiste 20k a week or whatever and Trotter could be done under the trades description act. there is no sense in football and I'm not sure there ever were.

except Ronnie O'Sullivan is not penniless and waiting for a cue he can afford to appear on ebay - nor is Phil Taylor penniless and waiting for some darts to show up at the local car boot sale..TANGODANCER wrote:^^

that's a totally duff comparison!! Both of them could go out any day they wanted to and buy the most expensive cue/darts on the market without even checking their bank statements.
we are not in that position - we will probably be shopping long after the season has started.
it's not ideal cos we're in the financial doodies... bargains don't often come up at the start of a transfer window - they come up at the end when clubs and players get a lot more desperate. that's the world we are playing in.

Cos he was the only player who played for most of the season? Apart from Feeney and nobody likes Feeney (I do).Bruce Rioja wrote:With Ream being our player of the season last season I've still never quite sussed out as to whether that reflects (a) an improvement in his ability, (b) a reflection as to the level at which we're now playing, or (c) a sign as to how wank the rest of our squad were?

Had Pratley not got injured he was going to win it. Had Vela not been dodgy and injured for the run-in he'd probably have bagged it.
Clough would have certainly won it without the injury.
Ream won it by default. He's not a terrible player, but isn't a very good defender. I'm not sure how that squares up to be honest. I sort of agree about finding someone as good or better, but we could use the money just for someone who offers the things we're really short on at the back, like heading the ball and concentrating for the full game. Gudni only cost £50K or thereabouts....must be one of him around somewhere?

Frazier Campbell being linked with us on loan.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
