Update. I know they say try everything once, but really, there's no need on this one.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
The market was stunning today...
I especially liked the four foot high bundles of sugar cane (spelt - with outstanding greengrocer's skill as 'Cain') - what do you do with those?
The fish market offered a giant black bream for £4. We bought. We ate. We loved it. With new pots and asparagus and Pays d'Oc Viognier.
Even better - wimberries were for sale for £3 for 500 grams. Eaten in a pie with ultra-slimming cream from Jersey and a glass of sweet Muscat from southern France.
Hard life...

Whinberries ^^ (however it's spelt) are like blueberries which actually taster of something. I need to get some of them.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

It's a conundrum that one... I used my grannie's spelling>.. When, I was eating her pies - and, indeed, her tater cakes, and her tater hash, I knew she could do no wrong...bobo the clown wrote:Whinberries ^^ (however it's spelt) are like blueberries which actually taster of something. And I still know that... Long gone, I still miss her...

Late lunch at Levanter in Ramsbottom.
Rave-reviewed about a month ago by Jay Rayner in the Observer.
Tapas on the generous side in portion terms - we had padron peppers, artichokes with cheese and chilli, sardines and octopus. A house white (verdejo) and a red (tempranillo). A basket of varied artisan breads.
This is a seriously good place. Tiny. Busy. You can't reserve, just turn up. We were lucky to have an available table for two. Staff exceptionally friendly even though rushed. The cooking is simple, flavours excellent, wine exceptional for a house wine.
We'll be back!

Had my belated birthday lunch at Nutters in Rochdale, yesterday. Absolutely superb. Excellent food and perfect service. Such a fantastically friendly place serving top nosebag. Highly recommended. Can't wait to go there again.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
Was at Grill on the Alley in Manchester last night. Been before and enjoyed it a couple of years back, but won't be returning. Food was pretty poor and the steak required tooling which the restaurant couldn't provide, to cut it.
Starter came on a slate and jockies in a chip basket...which I could overlook had the food taken my mind off it.
Oh and they managed to retain a £40 bottle of wine on the bill, that I'd sent back unopened, coz it wasn't what I'd ordered.

Wagyu steak, dauphinoise spuds, veg and some jus/gravy. Was spectacularly good. Wasn't so keen on the between courses sorbet mind.

I notice from this list that you haven't done Blush Cider from Bude, or wine from Camel Valley. So not that done!Prufrock wrote:Crab.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

I meant I was done! Fab week of food, and the extremes of Britishness. One typical-ish day had a lunch of crab sandwiches and ice-cream washed down with G&Ts and Prosecco, and a tea of fish and chips on the harbour wall with several pints of Tribute. Was fit.
If you're ever Lizard way there's an ace Thai take-away that's out of the kitchen of someone's house down a tiny lane. Was top.
Looks like her 'rents are moving there full time so plenty of time to keep an eye out for the above; they good?

Vesuvio is owned and run by the husband of my mrs' best mate. Staunch Neapolitan! He has been head chef at a few top Italians in Manchester; San Carlo, Cicchetti amongst others.
We went to their wedding in the hills above Cattolica a few years ago, that was an amazing experience!
not been back to Vesuvio since the opening week tho tbh, need to remedy that soon!

Still haven't been.. For a relatively small place, we're quite lucky to have a lot of decent eateries.. Grenache is simply fantastic.. Nowhere better locally, then there's George's which is good, Old Hall which is great (especially on a nice day). Alberts Shed, Vesuvios (apparently), Zest, tung fong and Ambiente

Paella tonight at Chambao de Joaquin. Seriously the best Paella I have ever tasted. You have to give them 2 hours notice as it is all cooked fresh. Absolutely brilliant!
