If carlsberg did transfer threads.....This would be it!

Burnley have just paid £9m for a striker. Football is f*cked. And we especially.

several years ago we paid £8.2mill for a striker - and a little while before that we paid £8mill for a striker...

times have certainly changed!

Haha 9mill for Gray.

This from a team who were watching the purse strings like Scrooge when they were in the Prem last season too.

I'm not buying it either. He scored 16 goals in 45 games last year, and even Brentford fans were moaning about him when we went down there.

aww c'mon Pirate - tis only jestin! :D

Yeah, it's not a dig at you Bish; it just seems almost every player we have or we're linked with is sh it. Every other team seem to have better players, better chairmen, richer owners, Lennon can't manage etc etc. It just gets a bit wearing after a while. And I know you would agree with what I'm about to say more than most, and that is we are Bolton Wanderers, not Real Madrid. We punched above our weight for years, but now, about mid table in the championship is about as good as it's going to get. We have to get used to it and stop winging and voice some support. ( from someone who enjoys a moan more than most  )
At the moment, we're not even 'Uddersfield. Brentford or MK Dons, either..all who have more points than us. :-)

I'm fairly sure had a couple of bounces fallen another way or the bar and post had obligingly ducked out of the way, folks would be more upbeat. When you're at the bottom of the league, then all the clubs above you are de-facto "better".

What we've watched, probably, since Allardyce left, week in week out, is the football deteriorating - we were punching above our weight for a few seasons under Allardyce, but by the time we got to Megson, we were an established Prem Club (and at the time funded like an established Prem Club). Punching at the weight of our spending. Since then and over a good number of years it's been one way travel. It's tough to watch week in and week out. Despite teasing Plymouth about his promotion season comments :-) it is frustrating when professional footballers can't hit a five yard pass to someone in the same coloured shirt (and that's our supposedly "good" players).

Folks single out players for criticism week in, week out, despite the fact it's a shiniest turd competition at the moment.

I'll be there voicing my support today (again).

Fairly sure there were also people moaning about signing Diouf. I know there were complaints about signing SKD.

Bolton fans do like a moan, and in the last season or so we've got what we wanted....

Last season? We've been awful for a long time now. Like Worthy says the deterioration has been horrid to watch. And the fact we've not reversed it in what 7 years or so? Is worrying to say the least.

Given the absolutely shxt financial scene he has to contend with, I reckon Lennon has done well enough on getting a team together. With Pratley, Clayton and Derrick back fit and possibly Wheater as a bencher in addition to Madine, Silva and the Italian full back included , and given our bit unlucky start to scoring, it could soon be a different picture if we just get in there and play football. COME ON YOU WHITES.... :oyea:

Worthy, one of the best posts of recent years....and a decent summary of the current situation,

Yes there is a lot of negativity from some fans (admittedly I'm worse than most !), but this negativity should be expected after so many years of utter shite that we've had to put up with on the pitch, its gone on for far to long and to be honest the paying BWFC fans deserve medals for actually putting up with this for so long.

Here's hoping today will bring a win to lighten the mood, but if not the criticism that will no doubt follow will be deserved.

Bit too sweeping to say we've been "awful" for "7 years or so".

At the beginning of that period we finished 13th, 14th and 14th in the Premier League, played some attractive (if naive) football under Coyle, and got as far in the FA Cup as we have since the Beatles formed.

Even more recently, we've had so good spells: it's just over two years since we won eight games out of 10 and finished 7th, only missing the play-offs on goal difference, and some of our play under Lennon last season was as exciting as I've seen since the days of Rioch and Todd.

We've bought players like Cahill, Chungy and Eagles, borrowed players like Wilshere, Sturridge, Dawson, the Juke and ALF, and brought through Academy players like Vela and Clough. That's a step up from buying Tony Caldwell, borrowing Nigel Jemson and developing Nicky Brookman.

It's only felt bad because we're on a downswing from four successive years in the country's top eight. If we ever think ourselves hard done to we could ask a Pompey, Darlington, Coventry or Hereford fan about the last seven years. Or remember what it was like for us for much of the 1980s.

Sometimes you finish 13th, 14th and 14th, because you're marginally better than the teams in 15th to 20th places. But realistically, I think that's where our budget at the time pointed at, both under Allardyce who did way better than budget and Coyle who should hang his fcking head in shame.

I think anyone who saw that run-in that took us to 7th (and let's not forget in the play-off spot, before the last game kicked off), would probably say it was winning football rather than vintage football - I'm happy with that, I'd have taken dour 1-0's all the way back to the Prem.

There will always be bright spots - young Clough's little run of a goal a game last season for example. The problem is, it's bright spots against a downward trend.

I can of course remember what it was like all the way down to the 4th Division and back again. Doesn't mean to say that I should compare against the lowest denominator I can find and say "well that's ok then". That'd just be plain stupid.

How sensible is comparing to the highest common denominator?

Not at all sensible. I reckon we'll probably be mid table on salaries. That to me would be a sensible comparison. If ED decides to call in his debt, then I could understand setting a denominator at "Pompey". I don't think we should be relegation fodder, but it's already looking a long hard season...

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
